Trabalhar em casa pode tornar-se bastante opressivo, especialmente se uma pessoa morar num pequeno apartamento como o nosso em Lisboa. Uma das vantagens de viver no campo é a possibilidade de ir dar um passeio sempre que apetecer. Gosto de andar um bocado depois do pequeno-almoço, especialmente se o dia estiver bonito. Ah, e parece-me que falei na Primavera cedo demais: mal escrevi o post, começou a nevar sem parar! Bom fim-de-semana!

Working from home can become quite oppressive, especially if one lives in a small flat like the one we had in Lisbon. One of the advantages of living in the country is being able to go for a stroll whenever you like. I enjoy walking right after breakfast, especially if the weather is fine. Oh, and it seems that I spoke of spring too early: soon after I posted that, it started snowing! Have a great weekend!

Pés Quentes :: Warm Feet

Eu gosto de ter os pés quentes tanto quanto a pessoa do lado, mas parece-me que alcatifa na casa-de-banho é algo como usar as pantufas de um desconhecido. Confortável, talvez, mas higiénico?

I like my feet to be warm as much as the next person, but it seems to me that a carpeted loo is something like wearing the slippers of a stranger. Comfortable, maybe, but hygienic?

Que a BBC é uma organização extraordinária já toda a gente sabe. Mas, sei lá por que razão, sempre imaginei que a revista Homes & Antiques fosse aborrecida… bem, não podia estar mais enganada! A primeira coisa que me chamou a atenção foi o styling das fotografias, depois as casas escolhidas, a mistura de antigo e moderno… acho que a vou assinar! O tema de Março é quilts e claro que pensei imediatamente em mostrar algumas páginas aqui.

Everyone knows that the BBC is an extraordinary organisation. But, for some reason, I had always imagined Homes & Antiques to be a rather dull magazine… well, I was completely wrong! What caught my eye at first was the amazing photo styling, and then I saw the homes they feature, as well as the clever mix of antique and modern pieces… I think I’m going to subscribe to it! The theme for the March issue is quilts and of course I immediately thought of showing you some of its inspiring pages.

English Country Life :: Wellies

Hoje faz um mês que chegámos a Inglaterra. Temos casa, carro, cama, sofá, mesa. Já desencaixotei 3/4 das nossas coisas, apesar de me debater diariamente com a falta de arrumação desta casa (objectivo deste fim-de-semana: encontrar armários para loiças, para roupas, para livros).

E que tal se, a partir de hoje, todas as sextas-feiras fossem dedicadas a um aspecto da vida quotidiana em Inglaterra? Adorei a coluna semanal sobre vestidos, mas chegou a altura se seguir em frente. Tema de hoje: galochas! São absolutamente indispensáveis à vida no campo e a nossa entrada tem um canto que parece feito de propósito para as arrumar. Outro móvel de que andamos à procura é um banco destes, para chegar a casa e descalçar as botas, claro! As nossas wellies foram compradas em saldos e são excelentes. Bom fim-de-semana!

Today marks one month since we arrived to England. We’ve got a house, a car, a bed, a sofa, a table. I’ve already unpacked 3/4 of our belongings but everyday I struggle with the lack of room to store things (goal for this weekend: finding cupboards for crockery, clothes and books).

I have a new theme for a Friday column: glimpses of daily English living. I loved putting together that column about dresses but it’s time to move on. Today’s theme: wellies! They’re an absolute must if you live in the country and our hallway even has a little nook that’s perfect for placing them. Another piece of furniture that we’d like to find is a bench like this one for when you come home and take off your boots, of course! Our wellies were bought on sale and are excellent. Acreditam que só há uma diferença de meia-hora entre as duas fotografias? Apesar de ser considerada incómoda e escorregadia, continuo a achar que a neve é algo mágica.

Can you believe that the second picture was taken only half an hour after the first one? Although snow is considered to be annoying and slippery, I still think it’s quite magical.

Quarto :: Bedroom

A casa que arrendámos vem com algumas coisas que queremos ir substituindo aos poucos: cortinados, candeeiros, alcatifas… Acho que a minha divisão preferida é o nosso quarto: ao contrário do resto da casa, as paredes são brancas e, tal como na maior parte do andar de cima, a alcatifa é bege e não verde. Há uma coisa, no entanto, que veio com a casa e que não quero mudar: o armário do quarto. Gosto principalmente do interior e dá para arrumar toda a roupa do Tiago.

The house we’re renting comes with some features we would eventually like to replace: curtains, lamps, carpets… I guess my favourite room is our bedroom: it’s practically the only one that has lovely white walls and, like most of the top floor, has beige carpets and not green ones. There is one thing that I certainly won’t change, and that’s the wardrobe in our bedroom. I especially like the inside and there’s enough room to store all of Tiago’s clothes. 
Para a minha roupa entretanto comprámos uma cómoda (outro achado… estou contentíssima com as perspectivas de comprar móveis neste país: é tão mais fácil do que em Lisboa). Estou a pensar trocar as cortinas de chintz por estores japoneses brancos; tenho uns lençóis antigos de linho que seriam perfeitos para isso… agora a grande questão é se terei coragem para me pôr a fazer estores ou não.

In order to store my own clothes we’ve recently bought a chest of drawers (another great find… I’m thrilled with how easy it is to buy furniture in this country: so different from the Lisbon scenario). I’m thinking of replacing the chintz curtains with white roman blinds; I’ve got some old linen sheets that would be perfect for the job… now the big question is will I be brave enough to make them myself?

Como vos disse, passámos o fim-de-semana em busca de mobília antiga/usada cá para casa. Entre outras coisas, queríamos uma mesa simples, de campo, para pintar de branco. Procurámos em antiquários, lojas de velharias e até no eBay. E não é que acabámos por comprá-la num armazém do YMCA por menos de nada?

Just as I’ve told you, our weekend was spent looking for antique/old furniture. Amongst other things, we were looking for a simple, farmhouse-style table to be painted white. We searched in antique shops, junk shops and even on Ebay. Who knew we’d eventually buy it in a YMCA warehouse for a bargain?
