After we finally removed the pink wallpaper in the sitting room and painted all the walls light grey, I was confronted with the big question of what to put on the mantel. Ideally we’d hang a “good picture” but hélas!, we don’t own any of those…
[Tiago and I frequently reminisce about how lovely it would be if only we had received an inheritance from a couple of spinster old aunts (imaginary aunts, of course)… what we would do with the objects they would have bequeathed upon us… it’s a common joke here in this household.]
In the absence of said painting, I started thinking that it would be nice to have some portraits of the boys. I immediately imagined something along the lines of a 1930s watercolour (you see what I mean?) but again I stumbled against the impossible grandiosity of my dreams.
Thankfully, another idea came to mind. I have a monthly subscription to Creativebug and I decided to take inspiration from this class on creating watercolour silhouettes. So in one of those weeks when Tiago was overseas, we made him a Christmas present. Mind you, this was two years ago: Rodrigo was nearly 4 and Pedro was 15 months old (you can see how long it takes me to actually write a blog post).
I started by taking photos (easier said than done). Then I enlarged them so that they ended up roughly the same size and I printed them. I then used tracing paper to trace the outlines of their profiles.
Then came the time to make “art”. While the children were at school I took care of the prep work: I took two A3 sheets of watercolour paper, applied a blue wash to them and taped them to our dining table. I chose a very limited palette of colours (very limited colours, I can’t stress this enough) of acrylic paints, as well as some big paintbrushes and foam rollers. When the boys got home we started painting straight away and as soon as I though they’d done enough, I took the paper away from them. A bit ruthless, perhaps, but with very young children the potential for disaster is huge. You must be firm!
The next day I used the tracing paper to transfer the profiles onto the “paintings”. I traced Rodrigo’s profile on Rodrigo’s painting and Pedro’s profile onto Pedro’s painting, naturally. I carefully cut out the silhouettes with an x-acto knife, glued them onto white sheets of watercolour paper, bought two frames and had two mats cuts to size. Finally, I wrapped the frames and put them under the Christmas tree with a tag with Dad written on it.
