France :: Food Markets

Um dos grandes prazeres de estar em França é poder ir aos mercados de rua. Os franceses são imparáveis no que toca à apresentação dos frutos e legumes e tem muita graça ver todas as pessoas (homens incluídos) com o seu cesto de verga debaixo do braço. Era lá que comprávamos o nosso picnic diário: uma baguette, um queijo local, sumo de maçã, uns morangos… Não tínhamos cesto, mas o saco que fiz especialmente para esta viagem serviu perfeitamente (ver última imagem).
One of the best things about France is going to the street markets. The French are the best when it comes to presenting fruit and vegetables and it’s wonderful to see every person (men included) carrying their own wicker baskets. We would buy own daily picnic over there: a baguette, a small local cheese, a bottle of apple juice, some strawberries… We had no basket but the bag I made especially for this trip was perfect for storing all the food (see last picture).

Paris :: Marché aux Puces

A viagem a França foi completíssima: visitámos cidades, passeámos pelo campo, revimos amigos de longa data, fomos a mercados e falámos três línguas diferentes. Hoje mostro-vos imagens da feira da ladra de St. Ouen (Porte de Clignancourt), em Paris. Não comprei absolutamente nada mas diverti-me bastante.
Our trip to France couldn’t have been better: we visited cities, walked in the countryside, met old friends, went to markets and spoke three different languages. Today I’m showing you some pictures of the St. Ouen (Porte de Clignancourt) flea market in Paris. I bought nothing but had a great time nonetheless.

Des Fleurs Sauvages

Os campos de França estavam cheios de papoilas e outras flores silvestres… um espectáculo digno de ser visto. Sempre que passávamos por campos assim, lembrava-me deste quadro de Monet:
The fields of France were full of poppies and other wildflowers… what a view. Whenever we’d go through fields like these, I’d think of this paiting by Monet:

Noutro campo, não resisti a fazer um ramo com o que havia à mão. Ah, como gosto de flores espontâneas!
In another field, I couldn’t resist making a small bouquet with whatever I could find. Oh, how I love spontaneous flowers!

Cross Quilt for Corrien & Jil

Fazer um presente de casamento é algo delicado. Antes de mais, a decisão de fazer em detrimento de comprar: qualquer pessoa que já tenha feito um presente em alguma altura da sua vida sabe o tempo e a dedicação que isso implica, e o consequente empenho e orgulho com que o oferecemos. Depois, a difícil escolha do que fazer e, no fim, o medo de que as pessoas a quem vamos dar o presente não gostem dele… oh, as torturas do feito à mão!
Making a wedding present is a delicate matter. First of all, the decision of making instead of buying: anyone who has ever made a present  knows the time and dedication it takes, and also the subsequent pride and commitment one feels when giving it away. Then, the difficult choice of what to make, and lastly, the fear that the recipients won’t like it… oh, the tortures of the handmade!
Decidi fazer um quilt para os meus amigos holandeses que se casaram recentemente. Escolhi tecidos lisos, cores que dão com a sala deles e um motivo moderno e intemporal. Inspirei-me muito neste quilt da Jennifer e neste bloco que a Katy fez no meu mês do Euro Bee.
I decided to make a quilt for my Dutch friends who got married recently. I chose plain fabrics, colours that go with their sitting roon and a modern, timeless pattern. I was very inspired by this quilt by Jennifer and this block Katy made with my Euro Bee fabrics.
Os tecidos da frente são estes e o de trás é um linho do Ikea que confere uma textura e um peso óptimos ao quilt. O quilt foi acolchoado à máquina e o debrum foi cosido à mão. As dimensões são 1,40 m x 2 m (54” x 78”) , o tamanho ideal para usar enquanto se vê um filme ou se lê um livro no sofá da sala.
The pieced fabrics are these ones and the backing is a piece of Ikea linen that gives the quilt a great weight and feel. I machine-quilted it and sewed the binding by hand. The final dimensions are 1,40 m x 2 m (54” x 78”), which are ideal for film watching or book reading on the sitting room’s sofa.

The Euro Bee :: April & May

Aqui estão os meus blocos do Euro Bee de Abril e Maio: o primeiro para a Isabel, o segundo para a Brioni.

Here are my latests blocks for the Euro Bee: the first is for Isabel (May), the latter for Brioni (April).

And this is the first version I made of Brioni’s block… I was completely distracted and I pieced the block the wrong way! Oh well…

Fruta :: Fruit

Para além do que semeámos, temos agora uns pés de morango e de tomate (os primeiros foram comprados e os últimos oferecidos). Vamos fazer figas para que dêem frutos!
In addition to what we’ve sown, we are now the proud owners of some strawberries and tomato shoots (the first were purchased, the latter offered). Let’s hope they give us some fruits!

Amarelo = Sol :: Yellow = Sun

Três clutches para três amigas: todas diferentes, mas todas no mesmo género. E que bem que soube trazer de volta o amarelo aos meus dias, principalmente porque coincidiu com a chegada do Verão ao campo inglês (pisar descalça a relva quente foi uma experiência emocionante… pensei que os dias de calor nunca iriam chegar. E jantar ao ar livre!). A vida é tão mais fácil quando o tempo está bom.
Three clutches for three friends: all different but all somewhat similar. And let me tell you how good it feels to bring yellow back to my life, especially now that summer seems to have arrived (walking on the warm grass with bare feet was an emotional moment… I thought this day would never come. And having dinner outdoors!). Life is so much easier when the weather is fine.
E, para celebrar o melhor da Primavera britânica, um ramo de flores dos prados: botões de ouro (buttercups: as minhas preferidas), malmequeres (que me fazem lembrar as idas ao Campo Grande com a minha avó), as encantadoras prímulas (primroses) e  alguns bluebells. E nas outras duas jarras, alguns dentes de leão. E agora vamos rezar para que o bom tempo se aguente!
And to celebrate the best of British spring, some flowers from the meadows: buttercups (my favourites), daisies, primroses and bluebells (not the wild ones, don’t worry). Oh, and some dandelions too. And now let’s hope that the fine weather will last for some time!

Yellow is the New Black

A minha amiga holandesa Corrien (a noiva do casamento amarelo de que falei) encomendou-me presentes para oferecer a algumas pessoas especiais. Para as mães, fiz estes sacos de Verão, em tons de amarelo, claro. Amanhã mostro o que fiz para as madrinhas. Estou cheia de vontade que chegue o dia do casamento, não só para estar com os noivos (visto que são holandeses, só os vemos uma vez por ano), como para ver o sítio onde vai ser a festa: um castelo no Loire!
My Dutch friend Corrien (the bride from the yellow wedding I’ve told you about) asked me to make some presents for a few special ladies. For the mothers I made these summer bags, in shades of yellow, of course. Tomorrow I’ll show you what I’ve sewn for their friends. I’m really looking forward to going to this wedding: we’ll spend some time with the bride and groom (since they’re Dutch, we only see them once a year) and the venue is an amazing place: a castle in the Loire!

Valentino-Inspired Bow Clutch

Daqui a uns dias vamos a um casamento em que o tema é amarelo. Usar um vestido amarelo está fora de questão: a minha pele portuguesa (a precisar de apanhar sol) ficaria com um tom verde-azeitona nada atraente… Solução: acessórios amarelos. Andava com vontade de experimentar um modelo de clutch diferente, especialmente desde que (há um ano?) vi esta do Valentino:
Next week we’ll be attending a wedding that has a yellow theme to it. Wearing a yellow dress is out of the question, as my Portuguese skin (desperately needing a suntan) turns into a revolting shade of olive green against the colour yellow. The solution is to get some sort of yellow accessories. I’d been meaning to try making a different type of clutch, especially since I saw this one by Valentino:

Mesmo a propósito, a Vogue Patterns tem uma série de moldes de clutches… reconhecem o moldelo E? Fiz a minha versão mais estreita e não a pespontei à máquina. Está a milhas de poder ser considerada alta-costura mas enfim… tenho uma clutch amarela e isso é que interessa.
Luckily for me Vogue Patterns has a series of clutch patterns… do you recognise view E? I made my version narrower and I decided not to topstitch it. It’s miles away from haute-couture but oh well… I’ve got a yellow clutch and that’s what really matters.
