O cheiro do linho / Linen fragrance
O linho… o linho desperta reacções ambíguas nos dias de hoje. Apesar de continuar a ser apreciado esteticamente, praticamente não se usa porque “fica logo numa rodilha”. É verdade que a perspectiva de ter de passar a ferro uns lençóis de linho causa arrepios, mas não há nada como dormir neles nas quentes noites de Verão. E secar as mãos a uma toalha de linho nos dias de festa, e pôr na mesa de jantar uma toalha de linho bordada são pequenas delícias de certas ocasiões.
Linen… nowadays people have all sorts of reactions towards linen. Even though it still is apreciated in terms of aesthetics, linen is not considered functional because it looks a mess soon after you’ve put it to use. It’s true that ironing linen sheets is a hard task but there’s nothing compared to sleeping on them in hot Summer nights. And drying your hands in linen and setting the dinner table with an embroided linen towel are small luxuries for special occasions.
Eu gosto muito de linho. Tenho visto por todo o lado (especialmente nos livros japoneses de costura e nas revistas francesas) crafts em que este material é utilizado em abundância. Inspirada por tudo isto, comprei — já há alguns meses — meio metro de estopa de linho na Rua dos Fanqueiros. Sim, foi uma dor de cabeça passá-lo a ferro. Mas cheira TÃO bem! Cheira a campo e a palha e a séculos passados.
I love linen. I’ve seen crafts that use linen everywhere (specially in Japanese craft books and French magazines). Inspired by all this I bought — some months ago — half a meter of unbleached linen. Ironing it was dreadful but it smells SO good. It smells like fiels and straw and past centuries.
Também já tinha esta chita há uns tempos. É muito intensa por si só, mas assim acho que fica quebrada pela simplicidade do linho.
This “chita” is a bit too intense but I think the simplicity of the linen balances the composition quite well.
Este saco fica para mim.

Presente de anos / Birthday present
Que bem que sabe ter gente satisfeita com o que faço! Isso a que se dá o pomposo nome de “feedback positivo” é do melhor que há.

Estava a guardar religiosamente este tecido da Denyse Schmidt que mandei vir dos Estados Unidos… agora percebo aquilo de custar cortar um tecido de que se gosta especialmente. Estou encantada com os tecidos norte-americanos!
I have been saving this Denyse Schmidt fabric that I’ve ordered all the way from the States… now I understand all that talk about not having the guts to cut out the fabric you really really love. I’m delighted with American fabric!
Saco do pão / Bread bag
Na casa de férias dos meus avós há o hábito de se ir comprar o pão de manhã cedo. Vamos a pé à padaria, pequena e antiga, e trazemos dezenas de bolas mal-cozidas em forno de lenha.
Every morning at my grandparents’ Summer house there’s a little walk to the small, old-fashioned baker’s where we buy dozens of white rolls.
Este saco tem alças para ser mais prático de transportar a pé. E como é para a minha avó (apesar de nunca ser ela quem vai à padaria), usei alguns tecidos que encontrei lá em casa.
Since we walk there, I’ve put straps in the bag. And since it’s for my grandmother (even though she’s never the one who goes to the baker’s), I’ve used some fabrics that I found at her house.
Também inclui um elemento novo: uma etiqueta Saídos da Concha! Estou muito entusiasmada com este novo apontamento; agora tenho de as fotografar melhor para mostrá-las aqui.

Frenchy feeling
Fiz uma outra carteira para os anos da minha mãe e segui um outro molde. Desta vez experimentei a frenchy bag (versão mala de mão) da Amy Butler, que ganhei há umas semanas no blog Sew, Mama, Sew!
As fotografias do resultado final são demasiado narcisistas para o meu gosto mas foram as únicas que ficaram decentes…
For my mum’s birthday I made another bag and followed the instructions of another pattern. This time I tried Amy Butler’s frenchy bag (handbag version) that I won some weeks ago in Sew, Mama, Sew!
The pictures of the finished project are a little too self-centered but they’re the only decent ones I have…
Bending the rules
Gosto mesmo deste livro. Gosto dos projectos variados, das fotografias de gente a sério, da forma despretensiosa como está escrito, das cores e dos tecidos escolhidos. Já gostava do blog Angry Chicken e contei literalmente os dias para o lançamento deste livro.
Ontem decidi, pela primeira vez, seguir as instruções de um molde. Escolhi a “charming handbag” mas tive azar, porque as medidas para as alças não existem e não percebi bem o sistema de as aplicar; fi-las à minha maneira (apliquei-as entre o tecido de fora e o forro) e acrescentei um bolso interior para o telemóvel.
Fiz a carteira para a minha mãe, que faz anos na sexta-feira.
I really love this book. I love the many different projects, the photos of real people, the unpretentions writing, the colours and the fabrics. I already liked Angry Chicken blog and I counted the days for this book to come out.
Yesterday, for the first time, I tried to follow the instructions of a pattern. I chose the “charming handbag” project but the mesurements for the handles were missing and I didn’t quite understand how exactly I was supposed to apply them, so I decided to sew them between the bag and lining instead of using casings and I added a pocket in the interior to hold a mobile phone.
No Verão também há cores neutras! / It’s Summertime: go into neutrals!
Encomenda da Fernanda, que me fez lembrar que o Verão é a altura perfeita para usar cores neutras. Com a pressa de lhe entregar o saco pronto, não tirei uma fotografia “de corpo inteiro” ao dito…
Fernanda’s commission made me realize that Summer’s the perfect time to wear neutral colours. I was in such a hurry to give her the bag that I didn’t take a full size picture of it…
My crafty life
Uhm… huge mistake… (apesar de parecer, isto não é encenação. É a vida real, como dizem dos actores de telenovelas).
