Ultimamente tenho tido uma vontade inexplicável de fazer roupa para mim. Já me sinto confiante com a máquina de costura, tecidos e linhas, e está na altura de dar um passo em frente. É verdade, vou aventurar-me na “confecção”, terreno inteiramente por desbravar, que sempre pensei estar reservado às modistas (aquelas senhoras em quem a minha avó fala às vezes).

Lately I’ve been having an inexplicable wish to make clothes for myself. I now feel confident with all the thread, fabrics and sewing machine business and it’s time to make a step forward. It’s true, I am about to venture into “confection”, a new land which I’ve always believed to be reserved to dressmakers (those ladies my grandmother sometimes talks about).

Primeiro passo: estudar o assunto. Decifrar moldes, direcções de corte, insersão de fechos éclair, casas de botões… Para isso conto com a minha recente aquisição deste livro, cuja capa mostrei aqui há dias.

First step: studying the subject. Deciphering patterns, cutting directions, zipper insertions, buttonholes… For all that I’m relying on my most recent purchase: this book whose cover I showed here a few days ago.

Segundo passo: fazer algo intermédio. Um chapéu, por exemplo. O dia da mãe aproxima-se e a minha mãe anda-me a dizer há tanto que precisa de um chapéu… É isso mesmo: o Blue Sky Hat da Amy Butler.

Second step: making something in-between. A hat, for example. Mother’s day is coming and my mum has been saying for so long that she needs a sun hat… That’s it: Amy Butler‘s Blue Sky Hat.

Cotton Time – May 2008

Até agora tinha-me cingido aos livros japoneses, mas finalmente consegui comprar uma revista Cotton Time aqui. Para além dos projectos habituais, estas revistas costumam incluir alguns ateliers. Adoro a ideia das caixas de vinho neste aqui em baixo:

Up until now I only had Japanese craft books, but I’ve finally put my hands on a Cotton Time magazine (which I bought here). Not only does it include the usual projects, it also shows us some studios. I love this idea of using wine boxes (you can see it in the two pictures below):


E que tal estes cabides? E os suportes para os carrinhos de linhas?!

What about these hangers? And the wooden rack for spools of thread?!

E quem diria que os naperons regressariam com tanta força…

Ora cá estão, tal como prometido, imagens do livro A is for Apron: 25 Fresh & Flirty Designs. Tem graça porque logo nas primeiras páginas aparece um avental folclórico português, daqueles “para turista ver”. Vêem o preto, segundo a contar da esquerda? Lá está ele!

Like I promised, here are some pictures of my new book A is for Apron: 25 Fresh & Flirty Designs. It’s funny because there’s a “typical for tourists” Portuguese apron right in the beginning of the book. See that black apron, the 2nd one on the left?Voilà!

Há muitos feitios (25, tal como o título anuncia) para todos os gostos; resolvi mostrar os meus preferidos. A combinação de tecidos nem sempre é brilhante (na minha opinião, claro está) mas o livro inclui moldes de todos os aventais (que terão de ser aumentados) e dá muitas ideias para qualquer amante de aventais.

There are many styles (25, as the book’s title states) for every taste; I’ve decided to show you my favourites. The fabric combo sometimes doesn’t suit my taste but the book includes patterns for all the aprons (wich you’ll have to enlarge) and will provide lots of inspiration for any apron lover.

Como é bom chegar a casa com a luz de fim de tarde, encontrar envelopes coloridos dentro da caixa do correio e dar de caras com livros encostados à porta! 🙂 Amanhã mostro mais imagens!

It feels so good to come home with the afternoon sun still shining, to find colourful envelopes inside the mail box and to have books waiting against the front door! 🙂 Tomorrow I’ll show some more pictures!

Aprender a coser – II / Learning to sew – II

Recentemente tive uma encomenda de um kit costura como este que fiz o mês passado. Como não gosto de fazer coisas iguais, e como andava há que tempos para experimentar fazer um destes sacos-cestos de inspiração japonesa, saiu-me isto. Acho que ainda lhe vou acrescentar uma tesoura e alguns carrinhos de linhas.

Recently I had a commission to make a sewing kit like the one I made last month. Because I don’t like making the same things over and over again and also because I have been meaning to make one of those zakka fabric baskets, I came up with this. I’ll probably add a pair of scissors and some spools of thread.

Anglophilia

Aviso: estou longe de me considerar uma profunda conhecedora da cultura inglesa. A minha anglofilia é puramente impressionista, mas isso não a torna menos pujante. Penso que a primeira responsável terá sido a Enid Blyton… sim, a minha infância foi rica em livros dos Cinco, dos Sete, do Colégio da Quatro Torres, das Gémeas, da colecção Mistério e de alguns avulsos que encontrei nas estantes de casa da minha avó. (Começo a reparar que falo muito na minha avó).

Disclaimer: I cannot say that I have an insightful knowledge of the English culture. My anglophilia is purely an impressionist one. Impressionist, yet thriving. I think the first responsible for this has been Enid Blyton… yes, my childhood was rich in books as the Favous Five, the Secret Seven, the Mystery Series (aka Five Find-Outers and Dog), Malory Towers, St. Clare’s and some others I found at my grandmother’s. (I’m starting to realise that I talk about my grandmother a lot).

Depois li muitos livros da Daphne du Maurier, passei por uma fase Jane Austen, o ano passado fiquei rendida à Nancy Mitford e agora estou maluca com os livros da Persephone Books.

Then I read many books by Daphne du Maurier, went through a Jane Austen phase, last year was Nancy Mitford‘s turn and right now I’m absolutely crazy about Persephone Books.

O livro que aparece em todas estas fotografias chama-se Greenery Street e foi escrito por Denis Mackail. É absolutamente delicioso, daqueles livros em que se saboreia a prosa e o espírito britânico. Mafalda, se passares em Walpole Street em Chelsea já sabes: estás em Greenery Street!

The book shown in every picture here is Greenery Street by Denis Mackail. It’s an absolutely delicious novel where you can actually taste both the writing style and the British spirit. Greenery Street is really Walpole Street in Chelsea, London.


Esta editora produz livros verdadeiramente requintados, com capas sóbrias, papel de qualidade e com a cor perfeita, tipo de letra agradável e guardas muito bonitas e sempre diferentes (neste caso, as guardas são um cretone que a protagonista poderia ter escolhido para forrar o sofá da sala). Fazem lembrar-me as edições exemplares da Cotovia!

This publishing house prints truly exquisite books with sober covers, good and perfect-coloured paper, a pleasant font and lovely and distinctive endpapers (“There was no question about the endpaper fabric for Greenery Street – it had to be something that the Fosters would have had in their house. This 1925 cretonne is, we believe, exactly what Felicity might have bought at ‘Andrew Brown’s’ (Peter Jones) and used to cover the sofa.”). They remind me of Cotovia‘s unique books!


Aqui está a tal guarda. Fica mesmo bem com esta chita-cretone do meu saco!

Here’s the endpaper. It really matches my bag’s cretonne (a traditional Portuguese cretonne called “chita”).
