A nova revista inglesa sobre crafts e costura chegou há uma semana à minha caixa do correio. É uma lufada de ar fresco em termos de projectos, cores e padrões, principalmente se a compararmos com outras revistas do ramo. Nota-se muito bem que a sua editora faz parte do mundo dos crafty blogs e fica-se com vontade de pôr em prática todas as ideias apresentadas. Viva a Sew Hip!

The new British sewing magazine arrived at my mailbox last week . It’s a breath of fresh air in terms of projects, colours and patterns, especially if you compare it to other sewing magazines. One can tell that its editor comes from the craft blogging world and one wants to try out every idea that’s featured in the magazine. Long live Sew Hip!

Entretanto esta semana uma prima minha fez 12 anos e ofereci-lhe este pouf (a versão pequena deste e deste. O tecido é do IKEA e acho que resulta mesmo bem.

This week a cousin of mine turned 12 and I gave her this ottoman (the smaller version of this one and this one). The fabric is from IKEA and I think it works really well.

Tadaa! Depois de tanto suspense, cá está o quilt! O meu primeiro quilt! Sim, é pequeno. Não, não sei qual é a sua utilidade. Mas fazê-lo deu-me imenso gozo e gosto muito dele!
Tadaa! After all the suspense, here is the quilt! My first quilt! Yes, it’s rather small. And no, I haven’t the slightest idea what it can be used for. But making it gave me so much pleasure and I love it!

Resta-me então falar do binding: foi preciso cortá-lo (em duas vezes, devido ao perímetro do quilt), coser as duas tiras uma à outra, aplicá-lo à máquina no direito do quilt e cosê-lo à mão no avesso. Trabalhei com um binding a direito (e não cortado em viés) principalmente por razões de economia de tecido.
Well, finally let’s talk about the quilt’s binding: I had to cut it (twice, due to the quilt’s perimeter), sew the two strips together, machine-sew it on the right side of the quilt and hand-sew it on the back. I worked with a straight binding (as opposed to one cut on the bias) mainly for economy reasons.

Pela primeira vez na vida usei um dedal. Não consigo gostar dos dedais rígidos em metal e a minha mãe ofereceu-me um em pele com uma parte reforçada em metal: aqui está ele. Adorei usá-lo e reconheço que é essencial.
For the first time in my life I wore a thimble. I can’t stand those rigid, metal thimbles so my mum bought me a leather one that has a dimpled disc inserted at the fingertip for extra protection: you can see it here. I loved using it and I admit it’s indispensable.



Não consegui tirar uma fotografia ao quilt acabado por isso terá de ficar para amanhã…

Finalmente acabei esta minha primeira tentativa de quilt. A parte de acolchoar sem walking foot não correu nada bem… como entretanto comprei um walking foot universal (marca Janome) aqui — graças à sugestão que a Soja –, resolvi desmanchar tudo e tentar novamente. Desta vez, fotografei o processo passo-a-passo.
I have finally finished my first quilting attempt. The actual quilting without a walking foot didn’t go well… but since I managed to buy an universal walking foot (Janome) here — thanks to Soja‘s suggestion — I decided to undo everything and start again. This time I photographed the process step by step.

Isto é como o patchwork é no avesso. A ciência de engomar as costuras para um lado ou para o outro ainda não foi bem apreendida: limitei-me a seguir as instruções da professora.
This is what patchwork looks like on the back. The whole science of pressing the seams to on side or the other has not yet been mastered by me: I just followed my teacher‘s directions.


Depois fiz a sandwich: primeiro o backing, depois o batting e em seguida o top.
Then I made the sandwich: first the backing, then the batting and finally the top.

Aqui está ele: o meu walking foot! Já li muitas vezes que tentar fazer quilts sem as ferramentas adequadas pode ser muito frustrante e é verdade que o walking foot tornou tudo facílimo.
Here it is: my walking foot. Several times I have read that trying to quilt without the proper tools can be very frustrating , and it’s true that owning a walking foot made things so much easier.

E aqui está o resultado final. Guiei-me pelas costuras exteriores dos quadrados e limitei-me a coser linhas paralelas e perpendiculares.
And here is the final result. I used the outer seams of the squares to simply sew parallel and perpendicular lines.

Depois foi tempo de acertar o quilt, cortando-lhe tudo o que estava a mais e tornando-lhe os ângulos rectos.
Then it was time to square up the quilt, cuting off the extra backing and batting and making the edges even.

Amanhã mostro como correu a parte do binding (ou, em bom português, debrum).
Tomorrow I’ll show you how the binding part went.

Notícias Magazine #855

Hoje saiu na Notícias Magazine — a revista de domingo do Diário de Notícias — uma reportagem sobre o movimento handmande. A repórter é a Gracinha e eu apareço nas duas últimas páginas! O facto de não haver fotografia minha é compensado com bastante texto, e eu não poderia estar mais satisfeita. Entretanto já tenho mais um ano do que aquilo que é dito e abri a minha loja… tudo o resto corresponde à realidade!

Today there’s a piece in Notícias Magazine — the Sunday magazine of an important Portuguese newspaper — about the handmade movement and I’m featured in it! Gracinha is the reporter and I’m on the last two pages. The fact that there’s no picture of me is largely compensated by the amount of text and I couldn’t be happier about it. I’m now a year older (the text says I’m 25) and I have my own shop… everything else is quite accurate!

Estação do tricot / Knitting season

Quando o Outono chega, a minha mãe desata a tricotar sem parar. Todos os motivos são bons para fazer tricot: está a chover ou está frio ou é de noite. Estou a tentar convencê-la a abrir uma loja Etsy para escoar tanta produção!

When Autumn arrives my mum starts knitting non-stop. Everything is a good reason to knit: it’s raining/it’s cold/it’s dark. I’m trying to persuade her into opening her own Esty shop so that she can sell some of her productions!

Chita é rainha / Chita, the queen of fabrics

Um dos meus pecados é comprar de vez em quando a The World of Interiors. É revista de e para gente grande, com os tecidos mais exclusivos (média de £100/m… pois) e os padrões mais fantásticos que imaginar se possa. Mais do que uma revista, é para mim um catálogo. Inacessível, mas muito tentador.

One of my sins is buying, once in a while, The World of Interiors. This magazine is both made by and aimed at grown-ups; it features the most exclusive fabrics (average £100/m… right) and the most fantastic patterns you can imagine. More than just a magazine, for me it’s a catalogue. Out of reach, but very tempting.

As produções são sempre bestiais: adorei este mostruário de tecidos numa pie and mash shop londrina. O contraste entre o chintz florido e os bancos e os azulejos modestos é extraordinário. Estava eu a observar atentamente os padrões e as respectivas legendas e de repente dei um salto: «”Laços”, £6 approx, Elisio Sopas & Ca.»… uma chita no meio de tanto chintz?

The productions are always fabulous: I loved this fabric display in a London pie and mash shop. The contrast between the flowery chintz and the modest benches and tiles is quite extraordinary. I was looking closely at all the patterns and text boxes and suddently I jumped when I read «”Laços”, £6 approx, Elisio Sopas & Ca.»… a Portuguese chita amongsts chintzes? (laços means ribbons)

Aqui está ela, no canto inferior direito (nº 6). Não fica nada atrás dos seus pares!

E isto faz-me pensar novamente que gostaria imenso de saber mais sobre tecidos tradicionais de outros países. A Rosa tem escrito sobre os africanos, mas e os outros? Espanhóis, franceses, escandinavos, russos (este livro está na minha wishlist)? Se souberem de alguma coisa, por favor digam!

Once again, this makes me think about how much I’d love to know a bit more about traditional fabrics around the world. Rosa has been writing about African fabrics, but what about all the others? Spanish, French, Scandinavian, Russian (this book is in my wishlist)? If you know something, please speak!


Uma questão de enchimento / A matter of stuffing

Nos últimos meses tem-se debatido cá em casa o enchimento deste pouf. Uns dizem que é muito mole e que, quando se sentam, o pouf vai abaixo. Outros aconselham vivamente o uso de bolinhas de esferovite em vez disto. O que é certo é que o pouf encarnado está tão cheio que literalmente rebenta pelas costuras.

In the last few months there has been a discussion around here about this ottoman‘s stuffing. Some say the ottoman is too soft and when you sit on it, it almost turns flat. Others recommend the use of those little styrofoam balls instead of this. Truth is the red ottoman is so full it’s starting to fall apart.

Um grande amigo meu vai mudar-se para a sua primeira casa e já várias vezes me tinha dito que gostava que eu lhe fizesse um pouf de ganga. Rendi-me então à esferovite e ontem à tarde fiz e enchi o pouf. Não fica tão giro como o outro — tem um ar mais vazio e inacabado –mas é muito mais flexível e confortável.

A great friend of mine is moving to his first flat and he told me he’d love to be offered a denim ottoman. So I surrendered to styrofoam and yesterday afternoon I made and filled this ottoman. It didn’t turn out as cute as the other one — it looks emptier and a bit unfinished — but it’s much more flexible and comfy.



Aqui dá para ver a diferença entre os dois. Acho que o conforto é mais importante que a beleza, por isso um dia destes vou substituir o enchimento do pouf encarnado.

Here you can spot the difference between the two of them. I think comfort is more important than looks so one of these days I’ll be replacing the red ottoman’s stuffing.
