A minha primeira experiência a fazer uma boneca de trapos baseou-se neste episódio da Martha Stewart com a Emily Martin. É outro dos presentes que posso mostrar antes do Natal, visto destinar-se a uma criança. Agora estou a fazer uma loura, que espero ter acabada amanhã!

My first attempt at making a cloth doll was based on this Martha Stewart Show episode with Emily Martin . It’s another present I can show before Christmas as it has been made for a child. Now I’m making a blond doll; I hope I’ll be able to finish it tomorrow!

Orla Kiely

Orla Kiely. Conhecem esta criadora-fenómeno? A Orla Kiely é uma senhora irlandesa de meia-idade, que vive há muitos anos em Londres e que começou com uma colecção de chapéus para o Harrods. Assumidamente inspirada na estética dos anos 60 e 70, esta designer é hoje em dia responsável por colecções de malas, acessórios, roupa e decoração de interiores (papéis de parede, abat-jours, roupa de cama e por aí fora).

Orla Kiely. Are you familiar with this design-phenomenon? Orla Kiely is an Irish middle-aged lady based in London who started with a collection of hats at Harrods. Inspired by the 60’s and 70’s aesthetics, nowadays this designer creates bags, accessories, clothes and home decor pieces (wallpaper, lamp shades, bed linens and so forth).

Quando estive em Londres, em Outubro passado, fui à flagship shop em Monmouth Street, ao pé de Covent Garden. Ia com a ideia de comprar uma carteira mas, apesar de a loja ter excedido todas as minhas expectativas, os preços eram demasiado salgados. Mais tarde vim a descobrir que no site havia algumas carteiras em saldos, e acabei por encomendar esta encarnada e branca.

When I was in London last October I went to her flagship shop in Monmouth Street, near Covent Garden. I was planning on buying myself a bag but, although the shop was even better that I had imagined, I found the prices a bit too ‘salty’ for me. Later I found that there were some bags on sale on her website and I ended up buying this red and white one.

A carteira veio numa embalagem postal que, apenas cortando as partes assinaladas, se transforma em saco. Não é inteligente?

The bag came inside a package that turns into a reusable bag just by cutting he dotted lines. Isn’t it clever?

Uma das limitações desta época é não poder mostrar aqui os presentes que tenho estado a fazer, sob pena de deixarem de ser surpresa. Mas como as crianças em princípio não visitam blogs, parece-me seguro falar sobre este rolo de lápis de cor que fiz para uma prima de 5 anos. O modelo é da Kathy e está incluído neste livro, apesar de também poder ser comprado como molde autónomo. No livro aparece no capítulo “duas-a-quatro-horas” e, de facto, demora algum tempo a fazer. Tentei ao máximo usar retalhos para fazer as secções coloridas mas nem sempre foi possível, até porque praticamente não tenho tecidos castanhos e roxos…

One of this season’s limitations is the inability to show here the presents I’ve been making, at least if I want them to be a surprise for the person who’ll receive them. As I assume children don’t read blogs, it feels safe to talk about this coloured pencil roll I made for a 5-year-old cousin. The pattern is by Kathy and is included in this book, although it’s also sold as an individual pattern. In the book it’s part of the ‘two-to-four-hours’ chapter and it does take a while to make. I’ve tried to use only scraps for the coloured sections but sometimes it was impossible; it seems I don’t own that many brown and purple prints…

Sabe tão bem dar um projecto por terminado e ficar satisfeita com o resultado. Estes enfeites, cuja criação e evolução fui mostrando ao longo deste mês, foram encomendados pela minha sogra; hoje à tarde estivemos a pendurá-los na árvore. Agora vou atirar-me aos presentes de Natal!

It feels so good to conclude a project and to be happy with the result. These ornaments, whose creation and evolution I’ve been showing you these last few weeks, have been commissioned by my mother-in-law; today’s afternoon was spent hanging them on the Christmas tree. Now it’s time to start making those last-minute Christmas gifts!

Grinalda / Garland

Uma árvore de Natal não fica completa sem uma grinalda. Lembrei-me de cortar folhas de feltro e de tecido e cosê-las umas atrás das outras, sem nunca cortar a linha. Será que 4 metros chegarão?
