Apesar de não ter gostado especialmente do filme Chéri , não posso deixar de aqui referir os magníficos vestidos de Léa de Lonval, protagonizada por Michelle Pfeiffer. Tecidos esplenderosos, cortes assimétricos e incrivelmente modernos: um óptimo vislumbre da moda da Belle Epoque!

Although I didn’t particularly like the film Chéri , I feel I must highlight some of the magnificent dresses Léa de Lonval (played by Michelle Pfeiffer) wears. Wonderful, rich fabrics; asymmetrical, modern cuts: it’s the Belle Epoque at its best!

Os presentes para a pequena Helena (o tal bebé que está para nascer) ainda não acabaram! A minha mãe e eu pensámos que um daqueles tapetes para brincar (acho que se chamam “tapetes de actividades”) seria não só uma boa ideia, como um óptimo pretexto para fazer outro quilt. Assim, eu escolhi os tecidos e a minha mãe executou!

I still have some presents for little Helena (that baby who will soon be born) to show you. My mother and I thought that a play mat would be a good idea, especially a quilted one. So, I chose the fabrics and mother made it!

Baby quilt

Finalmente posso-vos mostrar o quilt de bebé que tenho andado a fazer para oferecer à minha amiga que está grávida (não o pude mostrar antes de lho dar porque ela lê o meu blog!). Fi-lo para uma cama de grades (mede 85 x 120 cm = 33.5” x 47”) e usei tecidos da colecção Snippets da Moda: um charm pack (40 quadrados) para o centro, umas riscas para a moldura e para o debrum, e o padrão dos vestidos de bonecas para as costas. É raro gostar de todos os tecidos de uma colecção (acho que só me tinha acontecido com a Swell da Moda). O quilt foi muito bem recebido! Que bom que é fazer presentes.

I can finally show you the baby quilt I’ve been making for my friend who is pregnant (I couldn’t show it before because she reads my blog!). I made it for a cot (it measures 85 x 120 cm = 33.5” x 47”) and used fabrics from Moda’s Snippets collection: a charm pack (40 squares) for the centre, some stripes for the binding and the doll’s clothes print for the backing. I don’t tend to like all the prints  from one collection (I think I loved all the prints from Swell). I must say the quilt was well received! Making presents feels great.

Em honra das primeiras chuvas de Outono, a cor dos vestidos que hoje destaco é cinzenta. Cada vez mais acho que o cinzento é uma cor serena, elegante e intemporal, tanto em matéria de vestuário como de decoração de interiores. Um óptimo fim-de-semana, de preferência com sol!

Coin quilt in progress

Lembram-se do meu coin quilt? Comecei a cortar rectângulos em Março e desde aí nunca mais lhe tinha pegado devido a viagens, encomendas, enfim, outros projectos que foram acontecendo entretanto. Mas não gosto de coisas inacabadas e finalmente arranjei coragem para cortar um lençol (que estava rasgado mas cujo pano é óptimo) em 109 rectângulos. A partir daí, tem vindo a progredir bem e depressa, e como é enorme, tive de arranjar uma maneira de ir arrumando as tiras: pendurei-as no cabide da entrada. Vamos ver se acabo o quilt antes do Natal!

Remember my coin quilt? I started cutting rectangles back in March but it has been quite neglected since: there were trips, custom orders and several other projects in between. But I don’t like unfinished things so I finally got the courage to cut a (torn but excellent) bed sheet into 109 rectangles. It has been progressing well and fast ever since and, because it’s so large, I had to come up with a way to hang the strips while I’m not working on them: they’re now on the hallway coat stand. Let’s see if I can finish the quilt before Christmas!

São horas e horas de gravações sobre vida familiar, História, literatura, saúde, casa e jardim, política, sociedade, trabalho… em que as mulheres constituem sempre o objecto principal das conversas. Há entrevistas, excertos de livros, testemunhos pessoais. A Woman’s Hour é a minha companhia diária enquanto coso, coso, coso. Entre os meus episódios preferidos, contam-se The Quilter’s Guild of Great Britain, Anniversary of the sewing machine e Quilts (sobre os quilts de Gee’s Bend). Mas há muitos mais: vale mesmo a pena explorar!

Retalhos :: Scraps

Setembro é o mês de pôr a casa em ordem para depois (re)começar a trabalhar (já estou a pensar no Natal!). Os retalhos que tenho vindo a acumular pedem uma arrumação sistemática; caso contrário, torna-se quase impossível utilizá-los. Vou arrumá-los por cores, em baldes de tecido feitos dos próprios retalhos. O molde dos baldes é da Maya e pode comprar-se aqui. Provavelmente teria conseguido criar um molde meu, mas gosto da ideia de apoiar os meus fellow crafters, tal como gosto que, comprando as coisas que faço, apoiem o meu trabalho. A propósito, há uns dias li este excelente texto sobre o assunto.

September is the ideal month for tidying up the flat so I can go back to work (I’m already thinking about Christmas!). I’ve been accumulating scraps and they’re screaming for some kind of systematic organisation; otherwise, they are impossible to use. I’m going to sort and store them by colours in fabric buckets made out of scraps. This bucket pattern is by Maya and you can buy it here. I could probably have made my own pattern for it but I like the idea of supporting my fellow crafters, just the way I like it when people buy my things and support my work. By the way, some days ago I read this excellent post on the subject.
