Coin Quilt

Dois anos depois de o ter começado, eis que volto a pegar no meu coin quilt (falei nele aqui, aqui e aqui). Decidi que vou acolchoá-lo à mão (é demasiado grande e pesado para o fazer à máquina) e hoje de manhã a minha mãe ajudou-me a marcá-lo e alinhavá-lo com alfinetes curvos. Vai fazer-me companhia durante os serões de Outono (que já começou por estes lados).
Two years after having started it, I’m working again on my coin quilt (I blogged about it here, here and here). I’ve decided that I’m going to hand-quilt it (it’s too large and heavy to be quilted in a regular sewing machine) and this morning my mother helped me to mark and baste it. It’ll keep me company during these Autumn evenings (I feel we’re already entering into the new season and I’m very happy about it).

Colour in Design

No sábado fui a um workshop intitulado “Colour in Design”. Orientado por Kaffe Fassett e Brandon Mably, famosos pela forma despudorada como usam as cores e os padrões, pretendia-se que as participantes saíssem das suas zonas de conforto e passassem a usar as cores sem receios nem constrangimentos. O dia girou à volta do quilt “Mexican Party”, incluído no livro Quilts en Provence: cada pessoa levou tecidos para fazer a sua própria interpretação do quilt em questão e foi interessante ver as diferentes versões e ouvir os comentários dos orientadores. Não me parece que vá completar o meu quilt (na penúltima fotografia), até porque acho que os tecidos que levei não eram os mais apropriados para uma composição deste género… logo se verá.
Last Saturday I went to a workshop called “Colour in Design”. Taught by Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably, both famous for their bold use of colour and pattern, the main purpose of the class was for people to get out of their comfort zone and start using colour without any fears or restraints. The day was centered around the quilt “Mexican Party”, included in Kaffe’s book Quilts en Provence: each person brought along their fabrics in order to produce their own interpretation of the quilt’s design. It was very interesting to see the different versions and to hear the teachers’ comments on each of them. I don’t think I’ll go ahead with my quilt (in the penultimate photo) because I feel the fabrics I chose weren’t the most appropriate for such a design… we’ll see.

Festival of Quilts 2011

Aqui ficam algumas fotografias do Festival de Quilts de Birmingham que tirei na sexta-feira passada. Fiquei impressionada com profusão de padrões, estilos e cores, tanto dos quilts em exposição como dos tecidos à venda — tantas possibilidades! No sábado foi a vez do workshop com o Kaffe Fassett e o Brandon Mably… mas isso fica para amanhã.
Here are some pictures I took last Friday at the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham. I was very impressed by the profusion of patterns, styles and colours both regarding the quilts that were being exhibited and the fabrics for sale — so many possibilities! On Saturday there was Kaffe Fasset and Brandon Mably’s workshop… but I’ll tell you about that tomorrow.

Tecidos para um Quilt :: Fabrics for a Quilt

No sábado vou participar num workshop de quilting no Festival de Quilts de Birmingham. As instruções dizem para escolher 8 tecidos principais e 15 tecidos de apoio — depois de muita hesitação, lembrei-me de que há uns tempos comprei precisamente 8 tecidos da colecção Dream On by Urban Chiks for Moda. É raro comprar muitos tecidos da mesma colecção mas estes lembram-me aqueles lençóis americanos dos anos 60 e, quando os vi, pensei logo que dariam para fazer um quilt muito fresco e alegre. O workshop vai ser dado pelo Kaffe Fassett e pelo Brandon Mably — depois conto como foi!
On Saturday I’m going to participate in a quilting workshop during the Festival of Quilts in Birmingham.
The instructions tell us to choose 8 main fabrics and 15 supporting prints — after much hesitation, I remembered that some months ago I bought precisely 8 prints from the Dream On collection by Urban Chiks for Moda. I seldom buy many fabrics from one single collection but these reminded me of those American sheets from the 1960s and I immediately thought they’d translate well into a fresh, cheerful quilt. The workshop will be taught by Kaffe Fassett and Brandon Mably — I’ll let you know how it went!

Verão em Portugal :: Summer in Portugal

Uma das coisas que mais aprecio no Verão em Portugal é a abundância de fruta e legumes frescos. Os mercados cheiram a doce, as estradas são ladeadas de hortas férteis, há abóboras a secar nos muros das casas e bancas improvisadas por todo o lado. Que clima abençoado!
One of the things I enjoy the most about Portuguese summers is the abundance of fresh fruits and vegetables. The markets have a sweet smell to them, the roads are surrounded by fertile allotments, there are pumpkins drying out in the sun and improvised stalls everywhere. What a truly blessed climate we have!

Postais de Portugal :: Portugal Picture Postcards

Estamos de volta a Inglaterra, depois de umas semanas em Portugal. O tempo poderia ter estado melhor mas foi óptimo voltar a ver o mar, pôr os pés na areia, comer bem e passar tempo com amigos e família. Soube-me bem estar longe da internet e sinto as minhas energias e inspirações recarregadas. Agora é voltar ao trabalho cheia de vontade e novos projectos!

We’re back in England after a few weeks in Portugal. The weather could have been finer but it nevertheless felt great to be near the sea, feel the warm sand under our feet, eat the southern way and spend time with friends and family. I enjoyed this time offline and feel I’ve recharged my levels of energy and inspiration. Now let’s get back to work!
