A mais recente edição da revista Homes & Antiques (na qual já falei aqui) tem um artigo sobre tecidos britânicos do pós-guerra. O texto é bastante informativo e, sobretudo, as fotografias são fabulosas. Há mais de 50 anos, estes padrões complementavam uma decoração bastante carregada e escura – paredes bordeaux ou verde-seco, muitos materiais e texturas misturados (madeira + tijolo + alcatifa) – mas o styling do artigo é fresco e bastante contemporâneo. Os móveis e acessórios são da mesma época, é certo, mas o branco das paredes, o chão de tábua corrida e a opção por pequenos apontamentos de tecido – almofadas, painéis e  abat-jours em vez de cortinados pesados e franzidos – tornam estes tecidos muito apropriados à decoração de uma casa em 2010. Conseguiriam usá-los em vossas casas?
The latest issue of Homes & Antiques (I’ve already blogged about the magazine here) has an article on mid-century British textiles. The text is quite good and the photographs are extraordinary. More than 50 years ago, these prints would be part of an overall heavy, dark decorating style – aubergine or green walls, a mixture of materials and textures (wood + brick + carpets) – but this article’s styling is fresh and very up-to-date. The furniture and accessories are from the same era, true, but the white walls, the wooden floors and the way of presenting the fabrics – small details like cushions, wall hangings and lampshades instead of heavy curtains – make these textiles very easy to use in 2010 interior decoration. Now tell me, would you use them in your home?

Há seis meses que vivemos em Inglaterra. Tenho saudades de Lisboa – da família e dos amigos, claro, mas também da luz, das cores, dos fins de tarde, do rio e do mar, das idas ao cinema, do sushi – mas a vida cá tem-me trazido tantas coisas boas! Sinto-me cheia de sorte por poder viver entre o verde, os animais, a tranquilidade… Aprendi a gostar de jardins, plantei legumes, calço galochas quase todos os dias, guio à esquerda, vejo a BBC, visito casas senhoriais… Com o meu querido Tiago ao meu lado, este país é para lá de bestial.
We’ve been living in England for six months now. I miss Lisbon – especially family and friends, of course, but also the light, the colours, the sunsets, the river and the sea, going to the cinema, eating sushi… – but life up here has brought me so many good things! I feel so lucky to be able to live amongst all this green, animals, tranquility… I’ve learnt to love gardens, I’ve planted vegetables, I wear wellies almost every day, drive on the left side of the road, watch the BBC and visit great country houses… With my dearest Tiago by my side, this country is pretty fantastic.

Passar a Ferro :: Ironing

Já tenho um ferro novo. É um modelo Morphy Richards todo ‘xpto’ e comprei-o por menos de metade do preço (como eu adoro a internet). Sei que me aconselharam Rowenta mas o meu ferro antigo – supostamente fantástico – era dessa marca mas só durou três anos. E porquê tanta conversa sobre ferros de engomar? É que um dos segredos de uma peça bem feita é ir engomando todas as costuras, o que significa que, sem ferro, não consigo trabalhar.
I’ve got a new iron. It’s a Morphy Richards model with lots of bells and whistles and I managed to buy it for less than half price (oh how I love the internet). I know you told me to buy Rowenta but my previous iron – which was meant to be great – was by Rowenta and only lasted for three years. But what’s the reason of all this talk about irons, you may ask? Actually, one of the secrets of a well-made item is to iron all the seams, which means that, without an iron, I can’t work.

Tenho andado a trabalhar em encomendas de Verão, mas hoje o meu ferro de engomar morreu… e sem ferro, nada feito! Alguém me recomenda um ferro potente e fiável? 
I’ve been working on Summer orders but my iron has just collapsed… and I can’t work without it. Can anyone recommend me a powerful, reliable iron?
