Às vezes perguntam-me se tenho saudades de Portugal. Claro que sim — vivi quase 28 anos no país em que nasci e, como tenho a sorte de ter uma vida feliz, a maior parte das memórias é bastante boa. E depois segue-se a inevitável pergunta: o que te faz falta em Inglaterra? A família. Os amigos. E o Verão.
Hoje não resisti a partilhar convosco estas fotografias da minha avó, na praia, no início dos anos 50. Ah… praia, céu azul, sol, fruta madura, roupa leve, dias que não acabam, a sensação de que a vida pára durante umas semanas… assim é, para mim, o Verão.
A todos os que lêem este blog, onde quer que vivam: espero que aproveitem este Verão ao máximo!
Sometimes I get asked if I miss Portugal. Of course I do — for nearly 28 years I lived in the country where I was born and since I’m fortunate to lead a happy life, most of my memories are very good. And then comes the inevitable question: what do you miss now that you’re living in England? Family. Friends. And summer.
Today I’m sharing with you some pictures of my grandmother in the beach in the early 1950s. Ah… the beach, the sun, blue skies, ripe fruit, light clothes, days that never come to an end, the feeling that life stops for a few weeks… to me, that’s what’s summer is all about.
To everyone who reads this blog, wherever you live: I hope you make the most of this summer!

In India the meaning of summer is very different. It is not warm and pleasant like European summer but very hot , sweaty and humid. 🙂

I also missed the summer when I lived in Ireland (I'm from Galicia in Spain, close to Portugal 😉 specially that summer that rained for 52 days in a row (I think it was 2008…)
After a couple of years living there I brought all my summer clothes back to Spain because they were taking space in the wardrobe and there wasn't a chance to wear them. You would see Irish people wearing summer clothes anyway but in my Southern mind 15 degrees don't call for shorts and sandals, even if it is July 🙂
I loved many things in Ireland but the weather was always a big issue for me.

And Ireland is even more challenging than England!
I know it's a cliché to complain about the weather but it's not just the rain or the cold… it's everything: the smell of summer, the food, the things you do during these months, the overall mood… I'm trying to stay positive but I can only count the days until I go back to Portugal for a few weeks!
I also took all my summer dresses back to Portugal after just one summer here. 15ºC is good for sweaters, not sundresses! 😉

I am Portuguese (from Lisbon!) and I live in Ireland since October. The weather has been me greatest challenge ever since I got here. Though I have brought all my summer clothes and I don't intend taking them back to Portugal, I'm finding it impossible to wear them! As I have explained to my family, living in Ireland is almost like living in a kind of permanent Autumn 🙂
I don't actually miss the Summer in Portugal, I miss a proper Spring, with warmer days and no rain. Summer in Portugal is too hot for me and after a couple of weeks of beach, BBQs, picnics and petiscos I'm wishing for cooler weather!

I'm portuguese and I live in the north of Sweden. I miss the summer so much! I tell them all the time that I miss my summer dresses and I'm not sure they get it. It's like you said: it's everything. The smell, the food, the fruit, the hapiness, the going out without jackets.. family, friends. Oh, how I miss Portugal.

Eu sinto falta do verao tambem. Aqui no Michigan o Inverno e tao longo e tao rigoroso, e depois a Primavera e Verao sao muito humidos. Temos calor mas abafado. Sinto falta do mar, da praia, da familia entao nem se fala. E da comida tambem. 🙂

A parte melhor do Verão é poder voltar a casa pelas férias. E se fosse só isso que Portugal tem de bom… Aqui onde estou, em França, nem que fosse verão todos os dias, nunca seria a mesma alegria de Portugal. Um grande beijinho a todas as portuguesas que já vi que por ai andam também e que devem sentir a mesma falta de casa que eu sinto. E um bom verão para todos.

lovely photos of your grandmother and I love the style of bathing suit. In New Zealand it is winter and this week the shortest day. Summers in our lower south island are mixed and a little similar to England: if you want to barbecue or picnic do it right now while the sun is shining for in 2 hours it might be raining. I lived for a while in North America and really miss their guaranteed heat and not needing to carry a just-in-case cardigan.

Olá Constança, sigo este blog há bastante tempo, talvez fosse o primeiro blog que comecei a seguir, acreditas?
Enfim acho que comentei apenas duas ou três vezes, mas hoje não resisti ;p))
A minha irmã está a morar em Inglaterra, e realmente diz que o Verão por aqí já terminou, se é que algum dia teve por ai um dia de calor como aqui (hoje por exemplo).
Imagino as tuas saudades, porque eu não sei se conseguiria fazer uma mudança para tão longe. Afastei-me da minha família (Sintra) por opção, fiquei pela zona do Ribatejo, de qualquer maneira sei que estão todos por aqui, é fácil matar saudades!
A tua avó era uma mulher muito bonita! Tempos que hoje também recordamos com saudade.

Tenho tantas, mas tantas saudades do verão. Aqui no luxemburgo, o verão, practicamente não existe. Os dias de calor são quase todos na primavera, e o verão é uma especie de outono anunciado.
Este tempo para mim tem sido mesmo o maior desafio. A falta de sol e não haver mar é dificil para quem vivia perto da praia! Mas á falta destas coisas, guardam-se as memória, com muita muita força!

Adorei as fotos da sua avó, super moderna, de maiô, batom vermelho, linda! Adorei! Minha avó não era assim… snif!
Aqui no Brasil somos o contrário: temos um mês, um mês e meio de inverno mesmo (com direito a neve no sul do país), 2 a 3 meses de temperaturas na casa de uns 25 a 28 graus e os outros 8 meses de verão.
Eu não gosto muito do verão, pq as temperaturas são muito altas, prefiro a primavera e o inverno.
Mas, no teu caso, entendo perfeitamente a saudade do verão.

The weather in Lithuania is very similar to England's. For one exception, that our winters so much colder and longer.
That's why we are trying to spend some weeks abroad and to catch real summer days!
