Gosto imenso deste livro infantil que descobri numa op shop na semana passada.  Chama-se “Look! I Can Sew” e foi publicado no Reino Unido em 1973.

A maneira como este livro comunica a aprendizagem da costura é mesmo gira. As ilustrações, que seguem quase um esquema de banda desenhada, mostram tanto raparigas como rapazes a coser e a própria introdução diz que “boys enjoy making things as much as girls do” (o facto de isto ser dito tão expressamente só significa que na altura não deveria ser assim tão óbvio). Vemos as crianças a tirar medidas, a cortar moldes e tecidos, a colocar alfinetes, a coser, a engomar, a pintar tecidos, a fazer coisas para eles e para os irmãos mais novos. A linguagem é acessível, nada paternalista nem demasiado infantilizada. Olho para os desenhos e a boa-disposição destas crianças imaginárias contagia-me!

Adoro livros de crafts dos anos 70 e este é uma pequena pérola.

I’m completely smitten by this children’s book I found at an op shop last week. The title is “Look! I Can Sew” and it was published in the UK in 1973.

The way this book teaches kids to sew is really appealing. The illustrations are presented almost like a comic book and show both boys and girls engaged in sewing. Actually, in the introduction we can read that “boys enjoy making things as much as girls do” (the fact that this is stated in this way can only mean that, at the time, society didn’t take it for granted as we now do). We see children cutting patterns and fabrics, measuring, pinning, sewing, ironing, dyeing and making things for themselves and for their younger siblings. The language is accessible, not patronising nor too infantilised. I look at the pictures and these imaginary children’s happiness and enjoyment is contagious!

I love 1970s craft books and this particular one is a little gem.
