Estes dias entre o Natal e o Ano Novo são óptimos para passar em revista o que se passou e fazer planos para o ano que se avizinha. Estou a vibrar com as flores que vejo à beira das estradas aqui na NZ e lembrei-me de ir ver os arranjos que fiz ao longo dos três anos que estivemos em Inglaterra. Ora ficam aqui algumas imagens da nossa lareira em diversas estações do ano.
These days between Christmas and the New Year are great for reviewing what has happened throughout the months and to make plans for the year ahead. I’m excited with the flowers I’m seeing on NZ road verges so I thought I’d revisit some of the arrangements I made over the three years we lived in England. Agora que estamos em plena Primavera, chegou a altura de fazer o balanço das minhas tentativas de forçar bolbos em 2010-2011. Neste post expliquei como tudo começou e que conselhos segui e hoje, olhando para esta sucessão de fotografias, parece-me que o saldo é bastante positivo. À excepção dos narcisos da última imagem, tudo floresceu. Mas, mais importante do que isso, aprendi imenso, treinei a minha paciência, jardinei durante o Inverno e tive uma óptima desculpa para vasculhar lojas de caridade e feiras de antiguidades em busca de recipientes. Em Setembro tenciono começar tudo outra vez.

Now that Spring has truly sprung it’s time to assess my bulb forcing attemps in 2010-2011. In this post I wrote about how it all began and which advice I decided to follow and today, looking at all these pictures, I think the balance is quite positive. With the exception of the narcissi in the last photo, everything bloomed. But more importantly than that, I’ve learnt a lot, exercised my patience skills, managed to garden during Winter and had a great excuse to browse charity shops and antique fairs in search of containers. In September I plan to start all over again.

Paperwhites :: Narcisos de Papel

Cá estão os narcisos de papel, altos e perfumados, na cómoda da nossa sala. Não há bolbos mais fáceis: basta juntar algumas pedras e água, e em menos de duas semanas estarão plenamente desenvolvidos. E, desde que soube que são originários de Portugal e Espanha, ainda fiquei a gostar mais deles.
We’ve got some tall, highly scented, paperwhite narcissi standing on a chest of drawers in our sitting room. These bulbs couldn’t be easier to grow: just add some pebbles and water and they’ll show results in less than two weeks’ time. And ever since I learnt that they come from Portugal and Spain I found myself liking them even more.

O Outono chegou em força aqui a estas partes e qualquer dia não há flor no jardim que resista ao mau tempo. A perspectiva de longos, frios e escuros meses sem flores em casa é desoladora, mas felizmente há uma maneira fácil de dar a volta ao tema: forçar bolbos! O processo é simples e, se tudo correr bem, no Ano Novo teremos jacintos, crocos, muscari e bluebells. Autumn has arrived in all its glory here in England and I’m afraid the bad weather will make all  the flowers in the garden disappear quite quickly. The idea of long, cold and dark months without any flowers at home is pretty sad but happily there an easy solution: forcing bulbs! The process is simple and if all goes well we’ll have plenty of hyacinths, crocuses, muscari and bluebells in the New Year.
