Do you want to know what I do when I’m feeling a bit under the weather?

I’m Messy and I Know It :: Life is Messy Bootcamp 2013
A few days ago I had a light bulb moment: in 2012 I didn’t finish half of my projects because my desk was messy.
Yes, I know, a baby was born in February and it’s been hard to be alone with him all day. No matter what people say, a mother/grandmother is invaluable during these times. It isn’t easy to raise up a child in isolation. The the overall mess has contributed greatly to me feeling overwhelmed and on the verge of a nervous breakdown.
You see, I’m very organised but also very messy. No, that’s not a paradox: when I set up house I find a place for (almost) every object. My ribbons are colour-coordinated, forks, knives and spoons are nicely aligned in their own compartments, the polo neck jumpers are folded neatly in a pile, the mid-season cardigans in another. And those things I can actually keep tidy. It’s the everyday stuff that kills me: the letters, magazines, catalogues, the unfinished sewing projects, the records and the CDs, the paperwork, the notebooks and all those little pieces of paper with to-do lists… I’m a disaster in that field.
And now we’re living in a motel. With a baby. Without any space to unpack. With a tiny fridge. With no place to think, sort out my thoughts and define strategies.
For all of these reasons, I think that my single goal for 2013 is to seriously make an effort to be tidy (tidier). I have many wishes for the new year, of course — a nice house and a proper website come to mind — but I reckon that if I maintain a tidy desk, it’ll be much easier to make other things happen.
Do you remember how excited I was a year ago with Life is Messy Bootcamp? Well, can you believe that I didn’t finish it?… Amongst nappies, baby milk and baby food, trips to Portugal, visits from family and a major relocation (and work, let’s not forget that), I couldn’t manage to complete the course. Fortunately Mayi has launched a 2013 edition and I’m already enrolled!
Seriously, have you watched the introductory video? I was laughing out loud and wishing I could start taking the course that very minute. How can you possibly resist Mayi? She has such an engaging way of connecting entrepreneurship, organisation and personal success with pure, sheer fun!
Is there a better way to start the year than investing in yourself?
Will you join me?

2012
In March the garden was filled with daffodils and I made some things for Rodrigo (bibs, a pair of sailor trousers and a changing mat). But mostly I learnt how to be a mother… let’s just say that the early days weren’t exactly easy for me.
In April I made a pair of spotty dungarees for Rodrigo and my niece’s 1st birthday present (a doll and her quilt). I started selling quilt kits again and tried my hand at English paper piecing (I still haven’t put all those hexagons to use but I know exactly what I’m going to do with them).
In May I sewed a clutch to take to my friend Mafalda‘s wedding, a top sheet for Rodrigo’s bed and a canopy for the pram. I also put together a quick tutorial on turning a baby’s shirt into a bodysuit.
In June I was back to quilt kits. I also turned an Ikea bookcase into a wardrobe for the nursery and tested old family recipes. Rodrigo got his first taste of solid food.
In July this blog was closed for the summer holidays. In August I sewed some more sheets for Rodrigo, knitted (this sailor shirt is still unfinished… mum?) and put together lots of quilt kits.
In September we were back to wooly jumpers and tartans. It was a month of celebrations and we got to enjoy our lovely home.
In October I kept making things for Rodrigo’s bed (can you tell I’m obsessed with sleeping patterns?), sold most of my fabric scraps, made some presents and made the most of autumn days.
November was the month of quilt kits, fabric scarps and fat quarters. I made a couple of presents and we said our goodbyes to England.
And in December we started our life in New Zealand. We spent our first Christmas in the heat (30ºC with 100% humidity… it was almost unbearable) and we went to the beach on Boxing Day.
To all of you who read this blog I’d like to wish a wonderful 2013. May it be full of plans and finished projects, friendship and love, joy and peace. Let’s all meet over here!
