Este é o meu Sunday stash de hoje: tecidos encarnados e brancos a lembrar o Natal. Passei o dia a fazer enfeites, daí o tema natalício desta escolha.

This is my Sunday stash for today: red and white prints that make me think of Christmas. I’ve spent the day making ornaments, hence the christmas-y theme of this choice.

Ao contrário de muita gente, eu adoro comprar tecidos pela internet. Aliás, eu adoro comprar pela internet. Que bom que é ter acesso aos nossos produtos preferidos ou a coisas únicas, sem pressões nem horários! Por outro lado, as lojas online — e agora refiro-me àquelas que vendem panos — oferecem constantemente promoções, e é precisamente a essa secção que me dirijo em primeiro lugar sempre que entro numa loja de tecidos virtual.

In spite of some people’s reluctance to buy fabrics online, I actually enjoy it. I mean, I love buying online. How great is it to be able to browse through your favourite products, or even unique things, with no pressure nor schedules? On the other hand, online shops — and now I’m refering specifically to fabric shops — are constantly offering discount opportunities. In fact, the sale section is the first section I click whenever I enter an online fabric shop.

Eis que surgiu (mais) uma boa desculpa para escrever sobre tecidos: a iniciativa Sunday Stash da Tamara propõe que todos os domingos falemos sobre o nosso stash, que é como quem diz, o nosso armário dedicado aos tecidos. Quando estive em Londres fui à Fabrics Galore, uma loja em Lavender Hill especializada em vender tecidos em fim de série. Hoje vou centrar-me do que lá comprei e amanhã mostro fotografias da minha incursão à loja.

Now there is (another) good excuse for talking about fabrics: Tamara‘s Sunday Stash invites us to share a bit of our stash every Sunday. When I was in London I went to Fabrics Galore, a shop in Lavender Hill that specialises in selling end of line fabrics. Today I’ll stick to what I bought over there and tomorrow I’ll show you some pictures of my excursion.


Primeiro que tudo: tecidos Boden! A Boden é uma companhia de venda de roupa por catálogo de que já falei uma vez. Há uns tempos andei à caça dos tecidos deles no Ebay mas sem grande sucesso, por isso fiquei contente quando os vi live.

First of all: Boden fabrics! Boden is a mail-order clothing company that I talked about once. I had been unsuccessfully hunting for their fabrics on Ebay so I was pleased to see them live.


Este é um tecido Michael Miller: é giro para fazer babetes.

This print is from Michael Miller: it will make cute bibs.


O tecido cor-de-rosa é Liberty e o lilás é bom para carteiras de mão.

Este linho trouxe sem nada em mente, mas gostei dele e isso basta.

I bought this linen with noting in mind; I just liked it and that seems a good enough reason to buy it.

Que saudades que tenho de fazer malas atrás de malas… Escolher tecidos, pensar em modelos, imaginar que pessoa usaria determinada mala… Nos próximos tempos espero poder dedicar-me a isso. A fazer malas atrás de malas. Ah! esta está na loja.

I really miss making bags and more bags… Picking up fabrics, choosing patterns, imagining what kind of person would wear a particular bag… In the next few weeks I’m planning on working on it. Making bags and more bags. Oh! this one is at the shop.

Mankind Mag

Já saiu o nº 5 da Mankind Mag, uma revista independente da responsabilidade da Erin, autora do blog Design for Mankind. Esta edição é sobre o movimento handmade e conta, entre muitas outras coisas, com uma entrevista a Faythe Levine, crafter e cineasta, que assina o documentário e o livro Handmade Nation. O documentário só será lançado em 2009 mas o livro já saiu e eu encomendei hoje um exemplar! O trailer do filme pode ser visto aqui.

The 5th issue of Mankind Mag is out! Mankind Mag is a self-published indie magazine authored by Erin, who writes the blog Design for Mankind. This is the Handmade Issue and it features, among many other things, an interview with Faythe Levine. Faythe is a crafter and filmmaker who is responsible for Handmade Nation, both a documentary and a book. The documentary will be realeased in 2009 but the book is already published; I ordered a copy today! You can watch the trailer here.

Virago Modern Classics

Para mim, uma das grandes atracções de Londres é a variedade de excelentes livrarias. Gostei de, todos os dias, entrar pelo menos numa e perder-me nas estantes da ficção contemporânea, dos clássicos em língua inglesa e dos livros de crafts. Adorei conhecer as Waterstone’s, especialmente as de Covent Garden (dedicada a artes e design) e de Picadilly Circus (enorme, com cinco pisos e dois cafés). E visitei a minha querida Persephone, mas isso fica para uma próxima vez…

As far as I’m concerned, one of London’s greatest attractions is the variety of excellent bookshops. During my stay I enjoyed entering at least one of them everyday and getting lost among my favourite sections: contemporary fiction, classic British litterature and craft books. I loved Waterstone’s, especially the ones in Covent Garden (focused on art and design) and in Picadilly Circus (huge, with five floors and two cafés). I also visited my beloved Persephone but I’ll talk about that next time…

O meu amor pelos livros passa também por capas apetecíveis. Já aqui falei das capas da Persephone e da Cotovia, fantásticas na sua sobriedade, e agora estou fascinada pelas edições comemorativas dos 30 anos da Virago, outra editora britânica que publica livros orientados para o público feminino. No caminho para Lisboa devorei Excellent Women de Barbara Pym, cuja capa foi desenhada pela Orla Kiely (a minha mais recente obsessão). E hoje comecei a ler The Diary of a Provincial Lady, cuja capa pertence à Cath Kidston e que promete ser mais um livro delicioso!

My love of books also contemplates nice covers. I’ve already written about Persephone’s and Cotovia’s elegant and sober covers and I’m currently fascinated by Virago‘s commemorative editions (Virago is another British publisher of women-oriented books). On my way home I devoured Excellent Women by Barbara Pym, whose cover was designed by Orla Kiely (my latest obsession) and today I started reading The Diary of a Provincial Lady, whose cover is by Cath Kidston.
