Literatura de Verão :: Summer reading

O Verão é a estação do ano em que mais leio. Nas últimas semanas, devorei Lady Rose and Mrs. Memmary, Mariana e I Capture the Castle. Hoje, ao pequeno-almoço, comecei A Game of Hide and Seek. A minha anglofilia continua a crescer e o meu fascínio a respeito da vida quotidiana das “classes gentis” inglesas no período entre-guerras não cessa.

Ao arrumar a prateleira que alberga os meus livros britânicos, apercebi-me de que tenho dois romances da Jane Austen repetidos e por estrear: Emma e Mansfield Park. Pensei que constituiriam o objecto perfeito de um sorteio de Verão; o que vos parece? Para participar, basta que deixem um comentário indicando o título do livro a que se querem habilitar. Na sexta-feira anunciarei os vencedores.

Aproveito a ocasião para fazer uma pergunta às minhas leitoras francófonas/francófilas: existe algo na literatura francesa que se assemelhe a esta ficção inglesa, escrita por mulheres e dirigida a mulheres, que trata temas do quotidiano feminino sem contudo cair na literatura light? Livros que vão na linha daquilo que a Persephone publica? É que, caso haja, eu quero ler.

Summer is when I read the most. In the past few weeks, I devoured Lady Rose and Mrs. Memmary, Mariana and I Capture the Castle. Today, over breakfast, I started A Game of Hide and Seek. My anglophilia keeps on growing and I can’t get enough of gentle classes’ daily life, especially during the inter-war period.

While I was going through my British books, I came across two extra, unread copies of Jane Austen’s books: Emma and Mansfield Park. I realised these would make the perfect objects for a summer giveaway; what do you think? If you’d like to have one of these books, just leave a comment below telling me which title you’d prefer. I’ll announce the winners on Friday.


A question for my francophone/francophile readers: is there anything in French literature that resembles this kind of English fiction, written by women and for women, that deals with daily feminine concerns, nevertheless without being “light literature”? Books like the ones Persephone publishes? Because if such thing exists, I want to read it.

Actualizei novamente a loja, desta vez com quatro sacos perfeitos para o Verão. Por muito femininas e sofisticadas que sejam as clutches, há alturas em que é preciso mais espaço, não é? Estes sacos têm um tamanho óptimo e permitem ir directamente do tabalho para a praia!

I just updated the shop with four bags that are perfect for Summer. Clutches are very feminine and sophisticated but sometimes you need more room, isn’t it so? These bags have a great size, allowing you to head directly from work to the beach!

Os dias de praia voltaram, que bom! Recomeçou a estação das horas preguiçosas, dos dias intermináveis e da leitura à beira-ar. Para assinalar a ocasião, fiz um saco de praia para mim, enorme e bastante colorido.

Beach days are back, I’m so happy! The season of lazy hours, endless days and reading books by the ocean has once again begun. To celebrate this occasion I made a huge, colourful beach bag for myself.

Como tinha muitos retalhos deste tecido, e visto que o padrão é tão variado, lembrei-me de fazer um patchwork de um tecido só. O modelo é o Modern Diaper Bag, um dos muitos projectos para bebés e mães que aparecem no último livro da Amy Butler. Como não preciso de um saco para fraldas e afins, substitui os múltiplos bolsos que o molde sugere por apenas um para a carteira e as chaves.

As I had lots of scraps from this fabric and because the motive is so diversified I thought of making a patchwork of a single fabric. The pattern I used is called Modern Diaper Bag, one of the many projects for babies and mothers in Amy Butler’s latest book. I have no use for a nappy bag so I replaced the multiple pockets the pattern suggests by a single one for my wallet and keys.

Cá está ele! É enorme, mas como sempre gostei de “sacos à mãe” não me importo. E que bom que é pô-lo a uso!

Here it is! It’s huge but since I’ve always loved “mummy bags” its size doesn’t bother me. It feels great to put it to use!

Há muito tempo que tenho o projecto de fazer um levantamento de todos os meus tecidos. É engraçado como me afeiçoei a eles e como me consigo lembrar praticamente de todas as utilizações que lhes dei; é, pois, natural que queira conservar pelo menos um registo da sua passagem pela minha vida. Um exercício entre o metódico e o sentimental: é nisto que consiste o meu livro de amostras. Vou cortando e colando bocadinhos de tecido, e esforçando-me por me lembrar onde os comprei, quanto me custaram, quem os desenhou e quem os fabricou. Para mais tarde recordar.

I’ve been meaning to make an inventory of all my fabrics for a long time. Its funny how I got attached to my fabrics and how I can remember almost every use I’ve given them; therefore, it’s only natural that I want to keep at least a record of their existence in my life. An exercise simultaneously methodic and sentimental: that’s what my swatch book is all about. I’m cutting and pasting little fabric pieces and trying to recall where I bought them, how much they cost, who designed and manufactured them. So I can remember all of this later on.

O trabalho da Ashley Goldberg (aka AshleyG) é já conhecido por muitas e muitas pessoas — ela é, efectivamente, uma espécie de rockstar do Etsy. Há uns tempos a Ashley começou a fazer retratos por encomenda e, visto que os 35 anos do Tiago se aproximavam (foram ontem!), resolvi encomendar um retrato nosso. Depois de alguns e-mails e muitos envios de fotografias, eis o resultado final:

The work of Ashley Goldberg (aka AshleyG) is already known by lots and lots of people — in fact, she is kind of an Etsy rockstar. Some time ago Ashley started making custom portraits; since Tiago’s 35th birthday was coming (it was yesterday!) I commissioned a portrait of the two of us. After exchanging some emails and sending many photos, here’s the final result:
