Nada como passar uma manhã na cidade para levantar o moral. Sozinha e sem programa, comecei por entrar na biblioteca. Saí carregada de livros, claro!
There’s nothing like spending a morning in the city to lift one’s spirits up. Alone and with no commitments, I started by visiting the public library. I left with a heavy pile of books, of course!

Em seguida, entrei em todas as lojas de caridade por que passei. E o que comprei? Mais livros!

Then I entered every charity shop I could find. And what did I buy? More books!

English Country Life :: Daffodils

Há um mês que esperava impacientemente que os narcisos abrissem. Agora, apesar da neve (sim, ontem nevou!!), o jardim está cheio de sinais de Primavera. E eu, cheia de sorte, posso encher a casa de flores! Boa Páscoa para todos os que me lêem e muito obrigada pelos comentários ao post de ontem!
For a whole month I’ve been waiting with impatience for the daffodils to open. Now, despite the snow (yes, it snowed yesterday!!), the garden shows many signs of Spring. And I, lucky girl, can fill the house with flowers! I wish you all a happy Easter and tanks so much for yesterday’s comments!

Sudbury Hall – II

Outra das coisas de que gosto nas grandes casas inglesas é que, em termos de decoração, sabem quando muito é demasiado. No caso da galeria de Sudbury Hall, que tem estuques esplendorosos no tecto, as cortinas são brancas, de algodão fino, muito simples (fazem lembrar as tradicionais cortinas de cassa portuguesas). Não poderiam ser mais perfeitas.
Another thing I like about English country houses is that, when it comes to decorating, they know when to stop. For instance, the Long Gallery in Sudbury Hall has splendorous plasterwork in the ceiling and yet the white cotton curtains are quite plain. I think they’re just perfect.

Sudbury Hall

De todas as casas da National Trust que temos visitado, a minha preferida até ao momento é Sudbury Hall. Acho que tem uma dimensão muito humana e isso fez-me sentir bem lá dentro. O que mais me fascina nestas casas é, através dos móveis e dos tecidos, perceber que, ao longo do tempo, gerações da mesma família se foram apropriando do espaço, transformando-o ao seu gosto e conforme as suas necessidades.
Of all the National Trust houses we’ve visited so far, Sudbury Hall is my favourite. I find that it has a very human dimension and that makes me feel good. The thing that really fascinates me about these houses is that you can actually see, through all the furniture and fabrics, how each generation turned the place into their own home.

Calke Abbey II

Calke Abbey foi entregue à National Trust num estado bastante dilapidado e tem sido política da organização manter a casa nessas condições, a fim de ilustrar uma casa senhorial em decadência. Gostei de ver os tecidos usados e comidos pelo sol… fiquei com a sensação de que, de facto, a casa assistiu às vidas de muitas gerações. 
Calke Abbey was given to the National Trust in a state of decline and the institution has decided to preserve it in those conditions so that one can see a country house in decay. I liked seeing the textiles used and damaged by the sun… it made me feel that the house did indeed witness the lives of many generations.

À medida que os dias passam, vão surgindo sinais de que a Primvera está a chegar. É giro ir descobrindo um jardim plantado por outras pessoas.

As days go by I spot signs that Spring is coming. It’s fun to gradually discover a garden that’s been planted by someone else.
