Authenticity vs. "vintage"

Ainda sobre Bruxelas… Uma das boas descobertas que por lá fiz foi a loja Dille & Kamille, onde comprei tudo isto (excepto a caixa do pão). O que me entusiasmou nessa loja foi encontrar objectos tradicionais — aqueles que por vezes nos fazem correr toda a Baixa lisboeta em vão — como utensílios de cozinha em madeira e metal, frascos e etiquetas, loiça branca, brinquedos de madeira, escovas de cerdas naturais e por aí fora. E simplesmente tradicionais, sem pretensões nem tão pouco a “armar ao vintage“.

Once again about Brussels… One of the best finds over there was the shop Dille & Kamille, where I bought all this (everything but the bread box). What thrilled me about this shop was coming across traditional objects — the ones that make one search all around downtown Lisbon in vain — such as wooden and metal kitchen appliances, jars and labels, white faience, wooden toys and so on. Simple, unpretentious, traditional objects, not “vintage-y” ones.

Ao percorrer esta loja, grande e bem arrumada, ao som de música clássica, mais uma vez me apercebi de como me desagradam as coisas que fingem ser o que não são: móveis “envelhecidos”, anúncios à l’ancienne, enfim… confesso que a aparência de usado ou antigo — este enorme fenómeno do fake vintage, do qual a loja Comptoir de Famille é um bom exemplo — não vai comigo. Eu sou mais pela simplicidade e autenticidade.

While I was browsing this large, tidy shop, listening to classical music, I realised once more how much I dislike things that pretend to be what they are not: “aged” furniture, ads à l’ancienne, well… I confess that the illusion of used or old — this huge “fake vintage” phenomenon (the shop Comptoir de Famille is a good example) — isn’t my cup of tea. I prefer simplicity and authenticity.

Good things in Brussels: brocantes

Bruxelas é o paraíso das brocantes. Brocantes são feiras da ladra, mercados das pulgas, car booth sales, armazéns de velharias, you name it. Há todos os dias e em diferentes locais, e umas têm mais móveis, outras mais livros, outras mais tralha. São uma loucura. Como ainda por cima tivemos a sorte de apanhar bom tempo — como se pode ver nestas fotografias do mercado do Jeu de Balle –, a experiência de chiner foi ainda mais agradável.

Brussels is brocantes‘ paradise. Brocantes are flea markets, car booth sales, thrift markets, you name it. They happen everyday and everywhere; some are stronger in furniture, others in books, others in junk. It’s crazy. We were lucky because the weather was fine — as you can see in these pictures of the Jeu de Balle Market — so the whole experience of chiner was even more pleasant.

Esta foi a minha banca preferida no dito Jeu de Balle — uma senhora especializada em linge ancien. Aqui podem ver-se panos de um enxoval de 1908. Uma profusão de branco e encarnado… confesso que tive dificuldade em manter-me calma!

This one was my favourite booth at the Jeu de Balle market — a lady who specialises in linge ancien. Here you can see pieces of a 1908 trousseau. A profusion of red and white… I confess it was difficult to keep calm!




São estes os meus tesouros. A luz hoje está muito feia mas não consigo esperar que o sol apareça para finalmente tirar fotografias. Chego à conclusão de que sou muito previsível: sempre azul, branco e encarnado!…

Good things in Brussels: Cook & Book

A Cook & Book é uma mega livraria em Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, Bruxelas. Apesar de enorme, consegue ser bastante especializada — os seus nove ambientes acabam por ser nove livrarias diferentes: literatura francófona, BD, livros para crianças, viagens, arte, culinária, life style, livros ingleses e música.

Cook & Book is a huge bookshop in Woluwe-Saint-Lambert, Brussels. It’s a large bookshop but a quite specialised one — its nine sections could be nine different shops: francophone literature, comics, children’s books, travel, fine art, cooking, life style, English books and music.

Os pormenores são muito bons, como é o caso desta clássica alcatifa inglesa na secção britânica. Para além disso, come-se bem!

It has some great details, like this classic English-style carpet at the British section. Another great thing is that you can eat quite decently there!


Gent, Flandres

Gent foi a melhor surpresa desta viagem à Bélgica. Depois de um dia a pé por entre ruas e canais, esta cidade entrou directamente para o meu top 10 de cidades europeias de charme. Lá descobri grandes monumentos e obras de arte, mas também muitas praças cheias de esplanadas, uma dúzia de lojas de papéis de parede e oleados vintage e modernos, uma loja que conjuga peças feitas à mão com produtos de importação japonesa (e bem sabemos como estas duas coisas casam bem), a recomendada Dille & Kamille, que adorei!, uma casa de chá que me transportou para a Suécia gustaviana… Foi um dia em cheio.

Gent has been the best surprise of this trip to Belgium. After a whole day walking amongst streets and channels, this city has entered directly to my top 10 of charming European cities. There I discovered great monuments and master pieces, but also lots of squares full of terraces, a dozen shops of vintage and modern wallpapers and oilcloths, a shop that combines handmade pieces and Japanese products (and we know well that this is a match made in heaven), the recommended Dille & Kamille, which I loved!, a tea room that made me feel I was sitting in a Swedish gustavian room… What a day.
