Almofadinhas de Alfazema :: Lavender Sachets

Continuo a achar que umas almofadinhas de alfazema feitas em casa são um belo presente.  São femininas, deliciosamente antiquadas, úteis e não poderiam cheirar melhor. E são tão fáceis de fazer! Nestas usei dois tecidos Liberty, uma cambraia às risquinhas e linho grosso português. Uma fita a condizer, um laçarote em cima e já está!

I still believe that homemade lavender sachets constitute a very sweet present. They’re feminine, wonderfully old-fashioned, useful and so fragrant. And they’re so easy to make! Here I used two Liberty prints, a striped voile and some Portuguese unbleached linen. Tie them together, add a nice bow on top and voilà!

No outro dia estava a conversar com a minha mãe e ela estava a contar-me que tinha comprado um livro muito giro, cheio de ideias para fazer quilts com retalhos, mas que só havia um problema: a minha mãe  tinha falta de retalhos e não estava com vontade nenhuma de se pôr a cortar tecidos novos aos bocados. Eu, pelo contrário, tenho imensos mas pouco tempo para utilizá-los. Rapidamente enviei à minha mãe uma caixa cheia de retalhos (vai uma segunda a caminho) e ocorreu-me que deve haver mais pessoas com o mesmo problema: muitas ideias mas poucos retalhos. Então lembrei-me de fazer conjuntos de 250 gramas de retalhos, uns médios, outros mais pequenos, todos pré-lavados e escolhidos a dedo por mim. Há 25 conjuntos disponíveis aqui.

The other day I was talking to my mother and she was telling me about a great book she had bought, full of ideas to make quilts using scraps. My mother loved the projects but she had one slight problem: she didn’t have enough scraps and she didn’t want to cut up her new fabrics for this purpose. I have the opposite problem: too many scraps for the little free time I have right now. I quickly sent her a box filled to the brim with scraps (there’s another one on the way). Then it occurred to me that maybe other people have this same problem: too many ideas and not enough scraps to make them work. So I thought I’d put together some scrap bags for you to enjoy. Each bag weights 250 g (8.8 oz) and they include a nice assortment of prints and sizes, all pre-washed and chosen with care. There are 25 sets available here.

Eis uma ideia para simultaneamente utilizar pequenos retalhos de tecido e guardar os sacos de plástico de supermercado (que, por muito que nos esforcemos, acabam por entrar em nossas casas) — podem ver as explicações passo-a-passo aqui.

Retalhos :: Scraps

Os retalhos são a verdadeira essência do patchwork. Sabe tão bem pegar nuns restos de tecidos, cosê-los uns aos outros sem pensar muito e, no fim, ficar com material para fazer coisas novas. E é tão fácil! Este tipo de patchwork é improvisado, rápido e muito satisfatório. E permite aproveitar bocados de tecido que de outra forma não teriam muita utilização. Ao longo dos anos tenho feito alguns projectos assim: babetes, cestos para retalhos (feitos de retalhos!), almofadas, sacos, até postais. Costura ecológica no seu melhor!
Scraps are the true essence of patchwork. It feels great to grab a handful of fabric leftovers, sew them together and end up with material to make new things. And it’s so easy! This kind of patchwork is improvisational, quick and extremely satisfying. And it enables you to make use of those tiny pieces that would otherwise end up in the bin. Throughout the years I’ve made lots of projects using improv piecing: baby bibs, scrap buckets (made with scraps!), cushion covers, bags and even postcards. Eco-friendly sewing at its best!

Expliquem-me como é que uma pessoa consegue trabalhar com uma pilha atómica destas à solta… (e nem me falem no parque — é uma gritaria sempre que o ponho lá dentro!)
Just tell me how one can work with such an inquisitive little man around… ( and don’t even mention the word playpen — he screams whenever I put him in there!)

Oliver + S Reversible Bucket Hat

Uma das coisas que fiz na véspera de ir de férias para Portugal foi um chapéu para o Rodrigo. O modelo vem neste livro mas também está disponível gratuitamente aqui. Estava cheia de sono e acabei por não seguir a construção do chapéu à letra — em vez de deixar uma parte por coser, fiz o direito e o avesso separadamente… mas o problema resolveu-se rapidamente aplicando uma fita de viés. Esta é a medida mais pequena e serve perfeitamente a uma cabeça de 5 meses. E dá para usar de muitas maneiras diferentes:
One of the things I made on the day before I left for Portugal was a hat for Rodrigo. The pattern is from this book but it’s also available for free download here. I was very sleepy while I was sewing it and ended up messing up the construction — instead of leaving a bit unsewn, I made two separate shells… but the problem was quickly fixed by using some bias tape to put them together. This is the smallest size and it fits perfectly a 5-month-old head. And you can use it in all sorts of ways:
