Dia da Mãe :: Mother’s Day

Hoje é o Dia da Mãe em Portugal. A minha mãe está cá a passar uns dias connosco, e hoje de manhã ofereci-lhe este ramo de flores do jardim. E amanhã é o May Day!
Today Potugal celebrates Mother’s Day. My mother has come to visit us for a few days and this morning I offered her this bunch of flowers from the garden. And tomorrow’s May Day!

English Country Life :: Bluebells

Com um dia de atraso (a chuva não perdoa), eis mais um testemunho da vida campestre em Inglaterra. Foi com entusiasmo que vi aparecer os primeiros bluebells da estação (apesar de nunca ter ouvido falar nesta flor antes de vir viver para cá). Tenho vibrado imenso com a passagem dos meses e com a sucessão das flores: em Janeiro, snowdrops (campainhas brancas); em Março, daffodils (narcisos) e agora bluebells (campainhas azuis? jacintos ingleses?). O que se seguirá?
Although today is Saturday and not Friday (it’s been raining cats and dogs), here’s another testimonial of English country life. I’m excited to start spotting the first bluebells of the season (although I’d never heard of them before coming to the UK). It’s been thrilling to witness the passing of the months and the sucession of flowers: snowdrops in January, daffodils in March and now bluebells. What next?

English Country Life :: Simple Pleasures

Ouvir o carro encarnado do carteiro às 8h30 da manhã. Saborear a expectativa de hoje haver correio. Apanhar camélias no jardim. Folhear a Persephone Biannually e fazer uma lista dos livros a encomendar. Acabar o dia sentada na relva, com vista para os cisnes. Ah, que bom que é viver no campo.
Hearing the Royal Mail red car at 8.30 am. Enjoying the fact that today we’ve got mail. Picking camelias from the garden. Browsing through the Persephone Biannually and making a list of the books I want to order. Ending the day sitting on the grass looking at the swans. Oh, living in the country is pure bliss.

Grow Your Own

No início deste mês, aderi ao One Plot Pledge. A seguir, inscrevi-me no Dig In e recebi, pelo correio e de graça, quatro pacotes de sementes: courgettes (o meu legume preferido!), cenouras, tomates e feijão verde. Entretanto, a Alys Fowler transformou-se rapidamente na minha nova heroína. Este país está a despertar em mim um interesse pela jardinagem, quem diria?
Earlier this month I took the One Pot Pledge. And then I signed up for Dig In and got four free seeds packets in the post: courgettes (my favourites!), carrots, tomatoes and french beans. Meanwhile, Alys Fowler has quickly become my new hero. This country is getting me interested in gardening, who would have thought?

Ervas Daninhas :: Weeding

A época de jardinagem começou! Sou uma perfeita leiga no assunto, mas estou cheia de entusiamo. Antes de mais, há que começar pelo básico: arrancar as ervas daninhas.
Gardening season has begun! I know nothing about it; nonetheless, I’m very excited. I’ve decided to address basic things first and started weeding.

Do Jardim :: From the Garden

Um dia gostaria de passar algum tempo a ajudar uma boa florista. Gosto muito de flores (quem não gosta?) e admiro arranjos fluídos, naturais, orgânicos. Até esse dia chegar, vou praticando em casa, com flores do nosso jardim.
One day I’d like to spend some time helping a good florist (I think they’re called flower designers these days). I love flowers (who doesn’t?) and I admire fluid, natural, organic arrangements. Until that day comes I’ll practise at home with flowers from our garden.
