A Pensar no Natal :: Thinking about Christmas

Têm-me perguntado se este ano vou ter à venda mais enfeites de Natal e infelizmente a resposta é não. Mas as boas notícias são que podem fazer vocês mesmas os enfeites! Estamos no final de Setembro e ainda há muito tempo para comprar materiais e ir fazendo um ou dois enfeites por noite. É tão bom estar a ver um filme ou uma série e ter qualquer coisa para ir cosendo. Estes enfeites podem ser inteiramente feitos à mão e não é sequer preciso ter experiência de costura — qualquer pessoa é capaz de os fazer! Há que não ter medo e experimentar, e se os primeiros ficarem um bocado trapalhões, qual é o problema? Depois de terem feito quatro ou cinco estarão um ases. As minhas instruções para fazer enfeites de Natal em feltro foram escritas em 2008 mas continuam actuais. Experimentem!
I’ve been asked a few times if I’m going to sell Christmas ornaments this year and unfortunately I won’t. But the good news is that you can make them yourself! September is just ending which means there’s still time to buy supplies and make one or two ornaments every evening. It’s so nice to watch a film or series while you hand-sew something. These ornaments can be entirely made by hand and you don’t even have to be a gifted sewer — anyone can make them! Don’t be afraid and give it a try; if your first attempts turn out a bit wonky, who cares? You’ll be an expert by the time you’ve completed four or five. My instructions for making felt Christmas ornaments were written in 2008 but they’re still up to date. Give them a chance!

Flores de Setembro :: September Flowers

Para o baptizado do Rodrigo fiz três arranjos de flores: um na sala, por cima da lareira, outro na mesa de entrada e um terceiro na casa de jantar. Como sempre, todas as flores vieram do jardim (que, por esta altura do ano, já se encontra praticamente esgotado).
For Rodrigo’s christening I made three flowers arrangements: one for the mantelpiece in the sitting room, another for the the hallway table and one for the dining room. As usual, the flowers all came from the garden (which is looking rather depleted this time of year).

Praça :: Farmers’ Market

Quilos e quilos de citrinos óptimos, mel para dar e vender, ameixas dulcíssimas do tamanho de tomates-cereja, peixe fresco… como é bom ir à praça em Portugal! 
Kilos and kilos of citrus fruits, loads of honey jars, incredibly sweet plums as small as cherry tomatoes, fresh fish… Portuguese farmers’ market are wonderful!

Lisboa

Estivemos em Lisboa durante uns dias. Não estava demasiado calor e os jaracandás estavam em flor. Foi óptimo!
We went to Lisbon for a short stay. It wasn’t too hot and the jacaranda trees were in bloom. It was great!

Flores de Maio :: May Flowers

Dois arranjos com flores apanhadas no jardim na semana passada:
– o primeiro com flores cultivadas: anémonas coronárias, orelhas-de-elefante (bergenia) e viburnum opulus ainda verde;
-o segundo com flores silvestres: bluebells, red campion, miosótis e canabrás.
Two arrangements made with flowers I picked in our garden last week:
– the first using cultivars: poppy anemone (anemone coronaria), elephant’s ear (bergenia) and viburnum opulus still green;
– the second using wildflowers: bluebells, red campion, forget-me-not and Queen Anne’s lace.

Flores em Latas :: Flowers in Tins

A inspiração está em todo o lado, até numa simples (e aborrecida) ida ao supermercado. Quando vi estas latas de sardinhas em molho de tomate imaginei-as logo cheias de flores… não resisti a comprá-las e, mal cheguei a casa, enchia-as com anémonas, viburnum opulus e bluebells — tudo do nosso jardim!
Inspiration is everywhere, even on a simple (and boring) trip to the supermarket. When I saw these tins of pilchards in tomato sauce I immediately pictured them with flowers… I could not resist buying them and, as soon as I got home, I filled them with anemones, viburnum opulus and bluebells… all from the garden!

Flores de Maio :: May Flowers

O  nosso jardim está a rebentar de flores. Muitas ervas daninhas, muitas flores silvestres (onde traçar a fronteira entre o que é daninho e e o que é silvestre?) e muitas flores cultivadas (algumas semeadas por mim, mas a maior parte herdada de donos anteriores). Ao fim da tarde fui num instante lá fora, de cesto e tesoura na mão, e apanhei uma mão cheia delas para fazer um arranjo para a sala. A luz estava dourada (os fins de tarde no campo são mesmo muito bonitos), o ar estava frio e só se ouviam pássaros, abelhas e o vento por entre as folhas. O jardim cheirava a flores e o tempo parou durante alguns minutos. Amanhã apanho mais.
Our garden is bursting with flowers. We’ve got plenty of weeds, plenty of wildflowers (where do you trace the line between a weed and a wildflower?) and plenty of cultivars (some have been grown by me but the most of them come from previous owners). I went outside just before sunset, basket and scissors in hand, and picked a bunch to make an arrangement for our sitting room. The light was golden (late afternoons in the countryside are stunning), the air was cold and all you could hear was birds, bees and the wind blowing through the leaves. The garden smelt like flowers and time stood still for a few minutes. Tomorrow I’ll definitely pick some more flowers.
