Tartan Bags

Voltei às tartan bags, feitas de quadrados de fazendas e tecidos escoceses – uns novos, outos antigos. Trouxe de Lisboa alguns casacos e saias que a minha avó já não usava e tenho-os incluído nesta nova série de sacos para o frio. Assim, não só reaproveito recursos como tenho a oportunidade de trabalhar com tecidos que, de outra forma, estariam fora do meu alcance. Só vantagens!

I’ve been making tartan bags with squares of wool fabrics – some of these wools are new and some are repurposed. I’ve brought from Lisbon a number of skirts and coats my grandmother didn’t wear anymore and I’ve been including them into these cosy, wintery bags. This way not only do I repurpose materials, but I also have access to fabrics that would otherwise be out of my reach. And that’s a good thing!

English Country Life :: Autumn Garden

Apanhar flores e bagas em manhãs de nevoeiro, aperceber-me de como as verbenas bonariensis cresceram desde Junho, acompanhar o progresso das abóboras, varrer folhas e alimentar o caixote de compostagem (muita informação sobre fazer composto aqui)… assim é o nosso jardim no Outono.
Picking flowers and berries in misty weather, realising how much the verbenas bonariensis have grown since June, keeping up with the pumpkins’ progress, sweeping leaves and feeding the compost bin (lots of information about making compost here)… such is our garden in Autumn.

Dia da Maçã :: Apple Day

Acho que nunca tinha visto um Outono tão bonito como o deste ano: as folhas amarelas, cor-de-laranja, encarnadas e castanhas; o nevoeiro matinal e a luz dourada dos fins de tarde; a lareira à noite…
Há celebrações das colheitas por toda a parte e ontem fomos ao Dia da Maçã de Calke Abbey. Entre muitas variedades de maçãs, tive a boa surpresa de descobrir uns marmelos pequenos e muitíssimo aromáticos. Ando cheia de vontade de experimentar fazer marmelada e aproveitei para trazer para casa uns quantos… são difíceis de encontrar por aqui.
I don’t think I had ever witnessed such a lovely Autumn like this year’s: the leaves turning yellow, orange, red and brown; the misty mornings and golden afternoons; lighting the fire at night…
Harvest is being celebrated everywhere and yesterday we went to Calke Abbey‘s Apple Day. Amongst many varieties of apples, I was pleasantly surprised to find some small, incredibly aromatic quinces. I really want to try making marmelada – the Portuguese quince cheese – and I came home with a bag full of them… they’re quite hard to find around here.

O Outono chegou em força aqui a estas partes e qualquer dia não há flor no jardim que resista ao mau tempo. A perspectiva de longos, frios e escuros meses sem flores em casa é desoladora, mas felizmente há uma maneira fácil de dar a volta ao tema: forçar bolbos! O processo é simples e, se tudo correr bem, no Ano Novo teremos jacintos, crocos, muscari e bluebells. Autumn has arrived in all its glory here in England and I’m afraid the bad weather will make all  the flowers in the garden disappear quite quickly. The idea of long, cold and dark months without any flowers at home is pretty sad but happily there an easy solution: forcing bulbs! The process is simple and if all goes well we’ll have plenty of hyacinths, crocuses, muscari and bluebells in the New Year. Homemade

Cinco meses depois de terem sido semeadas, as courgettes e as abóboras estão a dar frutos. A sensação de comer algo que vi crescer é inexplicavelmente boa.
Five months after I sowed them, the courgettes and pumpkins are starting to fruit. It feels amazing to eat something that you’ve seen growing.

A macieira à frente de nossa casa está carregada de maçãs mesmo como eu gosto: rijas, ácidas q.b. e muito sumarentas. Tenho-as adicionado às saladas e queria experimentar fazer geleia de maçã, talvez com alecrim ou alfazema. Têm mais sugestões?
The apple tree in front of our house is jam packed with my kind of apples: crunchy, a bit tart and very juicy. I’ve been adding them to salads and I’d like to make apple jelly, maybe with rosemary or lavender. Any suggestions?
