Cinco meses depois de terem sido semeadas, as courgettes e as abóboras estão a dar frutos. A sensação de comer algo que vi crescer é inexplicavelmente boa.
Five months after I sowed them, the courgettes and pumpkins are starting to fruit. It feels amazing to eat something that you’ve seen growing.

A macieira à frente de nossa casa está carregada de maçãs mesmo como eu gosto: rijas, ácidas q.b. e muito sumarentas. Tenho-as adicionado às saladas e queria experimentar fazer geleia de maçã, talvez com alecrim ou alfazema. Têm mais sugestões?
The apple tree in front of our house is jam packed with my kind of apples: crunchy, a bit tart and very juicy. I’ve been adding them to salads and I’d like to make apple jelly, maybe with rosemary or lavender. Any suggestions?

Amoras :: Blackberries

Neste fim-de-semana apanhámos amoras silvestres. As amoras de cá são diferentes das portuguesas: maiores, mais sumarentas, mas não tão saborosas. Conseguimos apanhar 1 kg mas, como acabei por fazer geleia em vez de doce, a colheita rendeu muito pouco… Tenho de apanhar mais algumas enquanto é tempo!
Last weekend we picked blackberries from the hedgerows. British blackberries are a bit different from the ones one finds in Portugal: they’re plumper and juicer but not as sweet. We managed to pick 1 kg but, since I ended up making jelly, not jam, I wasn’t left with much juice… I guess I’ll have to pick some more while I still can!

Outono :: Autumn

Nunca me canso do ritmo das estações do ano – antes pelo contrário, sinto-me revitalizada e entusiasmada pelo que aí vem. Com a chegada do Outono deixo para trás os padrões frescos e floridos do Verão e inclino-me para os amarelos, laranjas e encarnados. Planos para as próximas semanas: experimentar fazer doce de amora (as silvas estão carregadas), apanhar as últimas flores do ano (especialmente as dálias que plantei em Abril), comer as nossas courgettes e abóboras e, para me preparar para uma feira em Novembro, coser como se não houvesse amanhã.
I never get tired of the rhythm of the seasons – on the contrary, I feel quite energised and excited about what’s to come. The arrival of Autumn makes me leave behind those fresh, floral patterns that are so characteristic of Summer and concentrate instead on yellows, oranges and reds. Plans for the next few weeks: trying my hand at making blackberry jam (the hedgerows are loaded with them), picking the last flowers of the year (especially the dahlias I planted in April), eating our very own courgettes and pumpkins and, in preparation for a fair in November, sewing like there’s no tomorrow.
