Play mat

Os presentes para a pequena Helena (o tal bebé que está para nascer) ainda não acabaram! A minha mãe e eu pensámos que um daqueles tapetes para brincar (acho que se chamam “tapetes de actividades”) seria não só uma boa ideia, como um óptimo pretexto para fazer outro quilt. Assim, eu escolhi os tecidos e a minha mãe executou!

I still have some presents for little Helena (that baby who will soon be born) to show you. My mother and I thought that a play mat would be a good idea, especially a quilted one. So, I chose the fabrics and mother made it!

Baby quilt

Finalmente posso-vos mostrar o quilt de bebé que tenho andado a fazer para oferecer à minha amiga que está grávida (não o pude mostrar antes de lho dar porque ela lê o meu blog!). Fi-lo para uma cama de grades (mede 85 x 120 cm = 33.5” x 47”) e usei tecidos da colecção Snippets da Moda: um charm pack (40 quadrados) para o centro, umas riscas para a moldura e para o debrum, e o padrão dos vestidos de bonecas para as costas. É raro gostar de todos os tecidos de uma colecção (acho que só me tinha acontecido com a Swell da Moda). O quilt foi muito bem recebido! Que bom que é fazer presentes.

I can finally show you the baby quilt I’ve been making for my friend who is pregnant (I couldn’t show it before because she reads my blog!). I made it for a cot (it measures 85 x 120 cm = 33.5” x 47”) and used fabrics from Moda’s Snippets collection: a charm pack (40 squares) for the centre, some stripes for the binding and the doll’s clothes print for the backing. I don’t tend to like all the prints  from one collection (I think I loved all the prints from Swell). I must say the quilt was well received! Making presents feels great.

Coin quilt in progress

Lembram-se do meu coin quilt? Comecei a cortar rectângulos em Março e desde aí nunca mais lhe tinha pegado devido a viagens, encomendas, enfim, outros projectos que foram acontecendo entretanto. Mas não gosto de coisas inacabadas e finalmente arranjei coragem para cortar um lençol (que estava rasgado mas cujo pano é óptimo) em 109 rectângulos. A partir daí, tem vindo a progredir bem e depressa, e como é enorme, tive de arranjar uma maneira de ir arrumando as tiras: pendurei-as no cabide da entrada. Vamos ver se acabo o quilt antes do Natal!

Remember my coin quilt? I started cutting rectangles back in March but it has been quite neglected since: there were trips, custom orders and several other projects in between. But I don’t like unfinished things so I finally got the courage to cut a (torn but excellent) bed sheet into 109 rectangles. It has been progressing well and fast ever since and, because it’s so large, I had to come up with a way to hang the strips while I’m not working on them: they’re now on the hallway coat stand. Let’s see if I can finish the quilt before Christmas!

The Euro Bee :: September

Fui desafiada a participar num quilting bee (uma estreia). O Euro Bee é composto por doze europeias: todos os meses uma das participantes envia tecidos e sugestões às restantes onze, que, no final desse mês, lhe enviam um bloco pronto. Nessa altura, a primeira terá blocos suficientes para fazer um quilt top. Este é o mês da Isa, uma dinamarquesa que quer fazer um quilt de picnic com estes tecidos.

I have a new challenge: I’m participating in my first quilting bee. The Euro Bee has 12 European players: each month one of the participants sends fabrics and directions to the other 11; by the end of that month, they’ll send her a finished block. She will then have enough blocks to make a quilt top. This is Isa‘s month: she is a Danish lady who wishes to make a picnic quilt with these fabrics.

Estes foram os cinco padrões que recebi, acompanhados por uma tira de tecido branco. A Isa queria que fizessemos quadrados e/ou rectângulos concêntricos, de acordo com este esquema.

These were the 5 prints I received, along with a piece of white fabric. Isa wanted us to follow these examples in order to sew square-in-square blocks.

Optei por fazer apenas um quadrado-dentro-de-quadrados, tendo dividido todos os padrões com recurso a uma moldura em branco. Foi uma experiência diferente e estimulante. Venha o próximo mês!

I decided to make just one square-in-square and I sewed thin white frames between the prints. This proved to be a different, rather stimulating experience. I can’t wait for next month!

Gracinha

A minha querida amiga Gracinha parte daqui a uns dias para Florença, onde passará os próximos quatro anos a trabalhar para um doutoramento. Fiz este quilt a pensar nela, para que a aqueça nos momentos mais frios e para que lhe traga muita sorte.

My dear friend Gracinha is leaving in a few days for Florence, where she’ll be working on a PhD for the next four years. I made this quilt thinking of her, hoping that it will warm her up during the coldest moments and wishing her all the luck in the world.

Alinhavar :: Basting

Voltei a pegar no quilt azul e verde que comecei há meses para a minha amiga Gracinha; vamos ver se é desta que o acabo. Em Setembro, a Gracinha vai viver para Florença e gostava muito que levasse este quilt consigo. Visto que a minha mãe está cada vez mais uma entendida em quilting – tenho de vos mostrar o que tem andado a fazer -, pedi-lhe ajuda na tarefa de “alinhavar” o quilt.

I’m working again on the blue and green quilt I started making months ago for my friend Gracinha; let’s see if I’m able to finish it quickly. Next September Gracinha will move to Florece and I’d love if she could take the quilt with her. Since my mum is becoming a quilting expert – I really must show you some of her recent work -, I asked for help in basting the quilt.

Experimentámos uma nova ferramenta, o MicroStitch, mas não ficámos convencidas. Já alguém o tentou usar? Esta pistola dispara umas pequeníssimas fitas de plástico, semelhantes àquelas que costumam segurar as etiquetas com o preço na roupa. No entanto, para que segure eficazmente as três camadas do quilt, é necessário levantá-lo um pouco… e isso é impossível porque a parte de trás está presa ao chão.

We tried out a new tool, the MicroStitch, but it didn’t work for us. Are you familiar with it? It looks like a glue gun and it shoots little plastic fasteners that resemble the ones you usually find holding price tags in clothes. Nevertheless, if you want it to properly hold the three layers together you need to lift the quilt a little bit… and this proves impossible because the backing is taped to the floor.

Recorremos então aos clássicos alfinetes-de-ama com barriga. Agora *só* tenho de o quiltar!

We decided to use those classic bent safety pins instead. Now I *just* have to quilt it!

Crafty Mama

A minha mãe é uma senhora muito prendada. Entre muitas coisas, tricota e cose muito e bem; aliás, já aqui mostrei algumas das suas criações. Recentemente, tem-se interessado por patchwork e quilting. Este é o quilt top que fez ontem, inspirado neste Bento Box quilt. Não está giro? Os tecidos são americanos, japoneses e franceses.

My mum is a very gifted lady. Among many things, she knits and sews a lot and very well; I have already shown you some of her creations. Recently, she is becoming interested in patchwork and quilting. This is the quilt top she made yesterday, inspired by this Bento Box quilt. Doesn’t it look great? The fabrics are American, Japanese and French.

O quilt começa a tomar forma… Visto que o esquema de cores é bastante limitado (triângulos azuis e triângulos verdes), optei por um padrão de verdes-no-centro-azuis-nos-cantos.

The quilt is starting to take shape… Since I have a very limited colour scheme (blue triangles and green triangles), I went for a greens-in-the-centre-blues-in-the-corners pattern.

Quebra-cabeças :: Puzzle

Pois é, comecei um novo quilt. Este foi prometido à minha amiga Gracinha, que adora verde e azul e que gostaria muito de ter um lap quilt para se aquecer enquanto trabalha no seu doutoramento. Escolher os tecidos foi fácil, fazer os blocos também não constituiu nada de especial, mas e agora compô-lo? Hoje passei mais de uma hora a trocar os blocos de um lado para o outro, sem ter chegado a nenhuma conclusão…

So I started a new quilt. I promised this one to my friend Gracinha , who loves green and blue and who would like to have a lap quilt to warm her up while she’s working on her PhD. Picking the fabrics was fairly easy, making the blocks was no big deal but when it comes to placing prints… Today I spent over an hour arranging blocks back and forth and I didn’t come to any conclusion…
