Tarde de Domingo :: Sunday Afternoon

Hoje passei uma óptima tarde no jardim, a lixar móveis, semear flores e coser o debrum no quilt (feito com camisas) que a minha mãe trouxe para o Tiago. Viva o Verão inglês!
Today I spent a lovely afternoon in the garden sanding furniture, sowing seeds and hand-sewing the binding on Tiago’s new quilt (made by my mother using old shirts). Hurrah for English summer!

Cross Quilt for Corrien & Jil

Fazer um presente de casamento é algo delicado. Antes de mais, a decisão de fazer em detrimento de comprar: qualquer pessoa que já tenha feito um presente em alguma altura da sua vida sabe o tempo e a dedicação que isso implica, e o consequente empenho e orgulho com que o oferecemos. Depois, a difícil escolha do que fazer e, no fim, o medo de que as pessoas a quem vamos dar o presente não gostem dele… oh, as torturas do feito à mão!
Making a wedding present is a delicate matter. First of all, the decision of making instead of buying: anyone who has ever made a present  knows the time and dedication it takes, and also the subsequent pride and commitment one feels when giving it away. Then, the difficult choice of what to make, and lastly, the fear that the recipients won’t like it… oh, the tortures of the handmade!
Decidi fazer um quilt para os meus amigos holandeses que se casaram recentemente. Escolhi tecidos lisos, cores que dão com a sala deles e um motivo moderno e intemporal. Inspirei-me muito neste quilt da Jennifer e neste bloco que a Katy fez no meu mês do Euro Bee.
I decided to make a quilt for my Dutch friends who got married recently. I chose plain fabrics, colours that go with their sitting roon and a modern, timeless pattern. I was very inspired by this quilt by Jennifer and this block Katy made with my Euro Bee fabrics.
Os tecidos da frente são estes e o de trás é um linho do Ikea que confere uma textura e um peso óptimos ao quilt. O quilt foi acolchoado à máquina e o debrum foi cosido à mão. As dimensões são 1,40 m x 2 m (54” x 78”) , o tamanho ideal para usar enquanto se vê um filme ou se lê um livro no sofá da sala.
The pieced fabrics are these ones and the backing is a piece of Ikea linen that gives the quilt a great weight and feel. I machine-quilted it and sewed the binding by hand. The final dimensions are 1,40 m x 2 m (54” x 78”), which are ideal for film watching or book reading on the sitting room’s sofa.

The Euro Bee :: April & May

Aqui estão os meus blocos do Euro Bee de Abril e Maio: o primeiro para a Isabel, o segundo para a Brioni.

Here are my latests blocks for the Euro Bee: the first is for Isabel (May), the latter for Brioni (April).

E esta é a primeira versão do Bloco para a Brioni… estava completamente distraída e cosi o bloco ao contrário! Enfim…
And this is the first version I made of Brioni’s block… I was completely distracted and I pieced the block the wrong way! Oh well…

The Euro Bee :: updates

Lembram-se do Euro Bee, aquele quilting bee em que estou a participar? O Euro Bee é composto por doze europeias: todos os meses uma das participantes envia tecidos e sugestões às restantes onze, que, no final desse mês, lhe enviam um bloco pronto. Nessa altura, a primeira terá blocos suficientes para fazer um quilt top.
Atrasei-me com a história da mudança, mas hoje consegui avançar um bocado: fiz os blocos da Monika (mês de Janeiro) e preparei os tecidos para Março, o meu mês. Gostava de ter um quilt para a sala e as cores do momento são azul, cinzento, salmão, amarelo-limão e branco.
Remember the Euro Bee, that quilting bee that I’m taking part in? The Euro Bee has 12 European players: each month one of the participants sends fabrics and directions to the other 11; by the end of that month, they’ll send her a finished block. She will then have enough blocks to make a quilt top.
I got a little behind due to our relocating to the UK but today I managed to make some progress: I sewed Monika‘s blocks (January) and prepared the fabrics for March, my month. I’d like to have a quilt in the sitting room and the colours of the moment are blue, grey, salmon, lemon yellow and white.

Para além de companhia e ajuda, a minha mãe trouxe um quilt para a nossa casa. Aliás, um quilt top. Alguém sabe de um serviço de long arm quilting aqui por estas terras?

As well as companionship and help, my mother brought me a quilt for our bed. I mean, a quilt top. Does anyone know of a long arm quilting service around here?

A semana dedicada aos quilts feitos pela minha mãe termina hoje com um quilt de losangos, inspirado num modelo que aparece neste livro do Kaffe Fassett. Os tecidos, muitos deles japoneses, vieram da Purl.

And so ends the week dedicated to the quilts my mother has made in the last few months. Today’s is a diamond quilt, inspired in this book by Kaffe Fassett. The fabrics, most of them Japanese, were brought from Purl.

Midwest Modern Quilt (made by Mum)

Imagino que já tenham adivinhado que esta vai ser a semana dos quilts feitos pela minha mãe… Este mede 1,30 x 1,80 m e foi feito com um designer sampler da colecção Midwest Modern da Amy Butler, sampler esse comprado na Quilt Home. A inspiração para o modelo do quilt veio novamente deste livro. (Mafalda, este é para ti!)

I suspect that by now you’ve already realised that this is going to be the week of quilts made by my mother… This one measures 1,30 x 1,80 m and was made with a designer sampler of Midwest Modern by Amy Butler; the sampler was bought at Quilt Home. Again, the inspiration for this quilt came from this book.

Zig Zag Quilt (made by Mum)

Mais um quilt feito pela minha mãe! Este quilt zig zag, em tons de verde e cor-de-rosa, foi inspirado em fotografias de muitos outros do mesmo género. A minha mãe apontou para uma medida final de cerca de 1,50 x 2m e depois fez as contas para criar este modelo. A maior parte dos tecidos foi comprada na Purl Patchwork, em Nova Iorque. O tecido de trás é Michael Miller e veio daqui.
Another quilt made by my mother! This zig zag quilt was inspired by many photos of other zig zag quilts out there. My mum decided that she wanted a quilt measuring approximately 1,50 x 2 m and then did all the math in order to get there. Most fabrics were bought at Purl Patchwork in NYC. The backing is by Michael Miller and came from here.

Mrs. Quilts a Lot

Agora que já mostrei a sala de trabalho da minha mãe, vou partilhar convosco alguns dos quilts que lá têm sido feitos. Este foi o primeiro quilt que a minha mãe completou e está pronto desde Maio passado. Foi feito com um jelly roll (um rolo com 40 tiras de tecido) da colecção Snippets da Moda e ficou com 1,60 x 2 m. O modelo foi tirado deste livro.
Now that I’ve shown you my mother‘s workroom, I’m going to share some of the quilts that have been made over there. This was my mum’s first quilt and was made last May. The pattern is from this book and my mum used a jelly roll (a set of 40 textile strips rolled up and tied in a bundle) from Snippets by Moda. The final dimensions are 1 x 2 m.

Mais um bloco em patchwork para o quilting bee deste ano! O Euro Bee é composto por doze europeias: todos os meses uma das participantes envia tecidos e sugestões às restantes onze, que, no final desse mês, lhe enviam um bloco pronto. Nessa altura, a primeira terá blocos suficientes para fazer um quilt top. Este é o mês da Rita, uma portuguesa que faz anos em Outubro (aliás, hoje!) e que quer fazer um quilt de Outono com estes tecidos. O pedido foi um wonky log cabin, um bloco cujas linhas são propositadamente tortas. Aqui está ele!
Here’s another patchwork blog for this year’s quilting bee! The Euro Bee has 12 European players: each month one of the participants sends fabrics and directions to the other 11; by the end of that month, they’ll send her a finished block. She will then have enough blocks to make a quilt top. This is Rita‘s month: she is a Portuguese lady who celebrates her birthday in October (it’s actually today!) and wishes to make an Autumn quilt with these fabrics. Rita asked us to make a wonky log cabin. Well, here it is!
