Coin Quilt

O meu coin quilt está finalmente acabado! Comecei a cortar os tecidos em Março de 2009 e cosi toda a parte de cima (o chamado top) ao longo desse ano. Depois mudámo-nos para Inglaterra e ficou esquecido numa prateleira…. até que há dois meses lhe voltei a pegar. Acolchoei-o e debruei-o à mão durante muitos serões e agora está pronto para ir para o nosso quarto em Lisboa. Um quilt feito à mão é mesmo especial e o resultado compensa largamente todo o investimento que lhe dedicamos. Recomendo vivamente!
My coin quilt is finally finished! I started cutting fabrics back in March 2009 and sewed the top throughout that year. Then we moved to England and there it lay forgotten on a shelf… until I took it up again two months ago. I quilted and bound it by hand over many evenings and now it’s ready to go into our bedroom in Lisbon. A handmade quilt is indeed something special and the result makes up for all the investment one puts in it. I highly recommend it!

Coin Quilt :: Binding

Finalmente acabei de acolchoar à mão o meu coin quilt; agora só falta debruá-lo. Normalmente debruo os meus quilts com fitas cortadas a direito, mas desta vez resolvi escolher um tecido aos quadrados e cortá-lo em viés. Está quase, está quase…
I’ve finally finished hand-quilting my coin quilt; now all that’s left is to bind it. I usually cut my bindings on the straight grain of the fabric but this time I chose a gingham print and cut it on bias. I’m nearly there…

Coin Quilt

Dois anos depois de o ter começado, eis que volto a pegar no meu coin quilt (falei nele aqui, aqui e aqui). Decidi que vou acolchoá-lo à mão (é demasiado grande e pesado para o fazer à máquina) e hoje de manhã a minha mãe ajudou-me a marcá-lo e alinhavá-lo com alfinetes curvos. Vai fazer-me companhia durante os serões de Outono (que já começou por estes lados).
Two years after having started it, I’m working again on my coin quilt (I blogged about it here, here and here). I’ve decided that I’m going to hand-quilt it (it’s too large and heavy to be quilted in a regular sewing machine) and this morning my mother helped me to mark and baste it. It’ll keep me company during these Autumn evenings (I feel we’re already entering into the new season and I’m very happy about it).

Cores Lisas :: Plain Colours

Com tantos padrões giros por aí, raramente pensamos em comprar tecidos lisos. Mas tecidos lisos, principalmente quando conjugados uns com os outros, podem ser tão ou mais interessantes que flores, bonecos, riscas ou pintas. Os meus preferidos são os Kona Cotton Solids e, como os encomendo sempre online, comprei há uns anos o mostruário de cores aqui. Pode parecer um investimento desnecessário mas garanto que vale imenso a pena, tendo em conta que os monitores dos computadores não são nada fiáveis em termos de cores.
With so many fabulous patterns out there, we seldom think about buying plain/solid fabrics. But plain fabrics, especially when you combine them with one another, can be as or indeed more interesting than flowers, stripes or spots. My favourite ones are Kona Cotton Solids and, since I always buy them online, some years ago I ordered a colour card from here. It may seem an unnecessary investment but I really think it’s worth it as computer screens aren’t truly reliable in terms of colours.

Gosto imenso de quilts em cores lisas e há um ano fiz um para os meus amigos holandeses. Usei o mostruário como referência mas, apesar de muito útil, fez-me falta poder pôr as amostras umas ao lado das outras. Agora que quero fazer um quilt cá para casa em tons de azul, verde e cinzento, resolvi cortar o mostruário em quadrados individuais. Acho que não devemos ser escravos dos objectos e, se algo não funciona, há que não ter medo de mudar!
I love quilts in plain colours and last year I made one for my Dutch friends. I used the colour card as reference but despite its undoubtable usefulness, I felt the need to put colours next to each other. Now that I want to make a quilt in shades of blue, green and grey for our sitting room I’ve decided to cut the card into individual squares. I believe we shouldn’t be slaves to objects so if something isn’t working, we shouldn’t be afraid of changing it!

Triangle Quilt for Filipa & Rui

A minha amiga Filipa casou-se em Agosto do ano passado e perguntei-lhe se gostaria que eu lhe fizesse um quilt ou se preferiria um presente “normal”. A ideia do quilt foi bem recebida e combinámos que as cores principais seriam azul e beige. Nove meses depois, o quilt está pronto. Não segui nenhumas instruções e o improviso significou que, a certa altura, tinha cosido um tampo de triângulos demasiado estreito e comprido; lembrei-me então de acrescentar uma moldura em azulão e uma barra em branco. O tamanho final é 1,50 x 2 m – era suposto ser uma manta de sala, mas agora dá para colcha de cama de solteiro…
My friend Filipa got married last August and I asked her if she’d like me to make them a quilt or if she’d prefer a “normal” present. The quilt suggestion was well received and we decided that the dominant colours would be blue and beige. Nine months later, the quilt is finished. I didn’t follow any pattern and ended up sewing the triangle top too narrow and too long so I framed it in blue and added a white border. The finished dimensions are 1,50 x 2 m (59” x 79”) – this was supposed to be a quilt for lounging on the sofa but now it’s fit for a bed…

Red & Aqua Bento Box Quilt

Já não tenho desculpa para usar o quilt do Tiago, porque finalmente acabei de debruar o quilt que a minha mãe fez para mim há uns meses. O enchimento também é 100% lã (tão mais quente que o tradicional batting de algodão) e os tecidos são todos americanos, excepto o da parte de trás. Obrigada, querida mãe!
I’ve got no more excuses to use Tiago’s quilt ever since I finally finished binding the quilt my mother made for me some months ago. The wadding/batting is 100% wool (so much warmer than the traditional cotton one) and all the fabrics are North-American, except for the one used as backing. Thank you so much, dearest mum!

Quilt de Camisas :: Shirts Quilt

De todos os quilts que a minha mãe já fez, este é o meu preferido até à data. Foi feito com camisas de quatro homens da família e sei a quem pertenceu cada bocado de tecido. Como os algodões das camisas são sempre óptimos, e visto que as camisas foram lavadas tantas vezes, o quilt é ultra suave e confortável. E porque a minha mãe ficou impressionada com o frio inglês, usou um enchimento 100% lã (Hobbs Heirloom Wool, comprado na dotQuilts em Lisboa). O quilt foi feito para o Tiago (eu também tive direito a um, que mostrarei assim que lhe coser o binding), mas acho que quem o vai usar sou eu…
Of all the quilts my mother has sewn so far, this one is my favourite. It’s made with shirts that used to belong to four men of our family and I know exactly who owned which bit of fabric. Since shirting cotton tends to be of high quality and because the shirts were washed so many times the quilt is extremely soft and cosy. And due to the rigours of English winters, my mother used 100% wool batting (Hobbs Heirloom Wool, bought at dotQuilts in Lisbon). The quilt was made for Tiago (I also got one, which I’ll show you as soon as I finish binding it) but I think I’m the one who’s going to use it…
