Gosto mesmo de receber emails de leitoras e clientes, especialmente quando incluem fotografias. Não há nada como ver as caras das pessoas que acompanham este blog e apoiam o meu trabalho! Ultimamente tenho-me deliciado com imagens de quilts já acabados — estes quilt kits são uma espécie de parceria entre mim e quem os compra e é uma alegria vê-los terminados e a uso. Criei uma página inteiramente dedicada aos quilt kits, onde explico aquilo em que consistem e respondo a dúvidas frequentes. Amanhã haverá kits novos na loja!
I really enjoy getting emails from readers and clients, especially when those emails include photos. There’s nothing like seeing the faces of the people who follow my blog and support my work! Lately I’ve been delighted to see pictures of finished quilts — these quilt kits are a kind of partnership between me and the people who buy them and it’s such a joy to see them completed and already in use. I’ve created a page dedicated to my quilt kits where I explain what they’re all about and answer frequently asked questions. Tomorrow there’ll be new kits available in the shop!

Boneca + Mini Quilt :: Doll + Mini Quilt
A nossa sobrinha mais nova fez um ano e este foi o presente que lhe oferecemos: uma boneca e um pequeno quilt para a boneca, tudo feito por mim. A boneca foi feita a partir do molde da Poppy Doll; o corpo é em flanela tingida com chá, o cabelo é parte de uma camisola de lã feltrada e o vestido de inspiração sixties tem entremeios de lençol que encontrei em casa da minha avó. Quanto ao quilt, o modelo é uma espécie de coin quilt e fi-lo rapidamente, sem muitos cuidados nem precisões, com sobras de quilt kits em tons de cor-de-rosa. O sashing branco é um resto de um lençol de linho comprado numa brocante na Bélgica.
Our youngest niece has recently turned one and this was the present we gave her: a doll and a mini quilt, both handmade by me. The doll was made using the Poppy Doll pattern; for her body I used tea dyed flannel, for her hair a piece of a felted sweater and for her sixties-inspired dress some bits of lace I found at my grandmother’s. As for the quilt, it’s sort of a coin quilt and I made it improv-style, without thinking too much, with remnants from quilt kits in shades of pink. The white sashing comes from an old linen sheet I bought some years ago in a Belgian brocante.

WIP :: Doll + Doll Quilt
A casa está desarrumada, o frigorífico vazio, tenho dezenas de emails para ler e responder. Numa corrida contra o tempo, tenho aproveitado todos os minutos livres dos últimos dois dias para acabar uma boneca que comecei há meses. E, como as bonecas merecem estar confortáveis, decidi fazer também um quilt à medida dela. Espero poder mostrar os resultados muito em breve!
The house is a mess, the fridge is empty, I’ve got dozens of emails to read and reply. In a race against time I’ve been using every free minute I have to finish a doll I started many months ago. And because every doll deserves a fair dose of comfort, I’ve decided to make her a mini quilt too. I’m hoping to share with you the results very soon!

De Volta ao Trabalho :: Back to Work
No sábado fomos os três à loja de tecidos. É uma loja enorme, cheia de tesouros e de horrores, um verdadeiro processo de tentativa e erro: às vezes venho carregada de tecidos giros, outras vezes não consigo comprar absolutamente nada. Desta vez trouxe de lá estes cortes (não queria acreditar quando encontrei dois tecidos da Lotta Jansdotter). Tenho passado todos os momentos livres — leia-se: sestas do Rodrigo — a cortar novos quilt kits. Se tudo correr bem, terei alguns disponíveis na loja para a semana!
On Saturday we went to the fabric shop. It’s a huge place, full of treasures and horrors, truly a hit or miss process: sometimes I’ll come home with kilos of great fabrics, other times I can’t buy a single piece. This time I bought the ones pictured above (I couldn’t believe my luck when I spotted two Lotta Jansdotter prints). I’ve been spending all my free time — i. e. while Rodrigo naps — putting together new quilt kits. Hopefully they’ll be available in my shop by next week!

Trip Around the World Quilt
Há uns meses a minha mãe ofereceu-se para fazer um daqueles “tapetes de actividades” para o bebé — basicamente um quilt para o chão (ou parque) com 1 x 1 m. Escolhi tecidos que ficassem bem na nossa sala e a minha mãe, inspirada no clássico modelo Trip Around the World (um esquema de cores concêntricas), rapidamente fez este quilt que finalmente fotografámos no fim-de-semana passado.
A few months ago my mother offered to make a playmat for the baby — basically a 1 x 1 m quilt for the floor or playpen. I chose fabrics with our sitting room in mind and my mother, inspired in the classic Trip Around the World pattern, quickly whipped up this quilt, which we finally managed to photograph this past weekend.

Baby Single Irish Chain Quilt
Estou precisamente com 7 meses de gravidez e cada vez penso mais no bebé que está para chegar… Hoje mostro-vos o quilt que a minha mãe fez para a alcofa: um mini single Irish chain quilt a condizer com a nossa colcha!
I’m now 7 months pregnant and find myself thinking more and more about this baby that will arrive soon… Today I thought I’d show you the quilt my mother made for his Moses basket: a mini single Irish chain quilt that matches our bedspread!

Double Irish Chain Quilt :: Finished!
Lembram-se deste quilt top que a minha mãe fez há quase dois anos? É um double Irish chain quilt e está finalmente acabado! Foi acolchoado numa máquina longarm pela Chris (que me foi recomendada pela Katy) e o binding foi cosido à mão por mim. Estou mesmo contente por tê-lo na nossa cama.
Remember this quilt top my mother made almost two years ago? It’s a double Irish chain quilt and it’s finished, at last! Chris (who can highly recommended by Katy) quilted it on her longarm machine and I finished sewing the binding by hand. I’m really thrilled to have it on our bed.

Quilts & Quilting :: How to Make a Quilter’s Knot
As instruções que escrevi para os quilt kits são praticamente um mini-curso de quilting. Hoje mostro-vos um pequeno extracto das mesmas — a parte em que explico como fazer um quilter’s knot. Este nó não só é ideal para acolchoar um quilt e coser um binding, como também é útil para coser à mão em geral.
The instructions I’ve written for the quilt kits are almost like a mini quilting course. Today I’m going to show you a little extract — the part where I explain how to make a quilter’s knot. This type of knot is perfect not only for hand-quilting and hand-sewing the binding, but also for hand-sewing in general.
Comece por passar a linha três ou quatro vezes à volta da agulha.
Start by wrapping the thread around the needle three or four times.
Com o indicador e o polegar, puxe a linha enrolada ao longo da agulha e a todo o comprimento da linha.
Using your index finger and thumb, pull the wrapped thread all the way down the needle and until you reach the end of your entire length of thread.
No fim da linha ter-se-á formado um nó perfeito. Se for necessário, corte a cauda excedente.
(é possível que tenha de treinar umas quantas vezes mas, assim que lhe apanhar o jeito, verá que é muito simples e rápido!)
You should now have a perfect knot at the end of your thread. If necessary, cut the remaining tail.
(you may have to try this a couple of times but once you get the hang of it you’ll see how simple and fast it is!)
