Podem achar que sou doida, mas acho que já é tempo de começar a pensar no Natal. Acabou de sair The Christmas Book, um livro cheio de ideias bestiais e ecológicas para preparar mais uma época natalícia. As imagens falam por si!

Olá Outono / Hello Autumn

É engraçado ver como tantos crafty blogs celebram as estações do ano. A mim também me fascinam e nunca me canso de admirar as transformações que suscitam. No Outono, adoro a mudança de cor das folhas, principalmente quando se transmutam num encarniçado raiado de verdes e amarelos. Tenho o sonho de um dia assistir à foliage no Vermont.

It’s funny how so many crafty blogs celebrate seasons. They fascinate me as well and I never get tired of admiring all the changes they bring along. In Autumn I love how leaves change their colours, especially when they become red with dashes of green and yellow. One of my dreams is to see foliage in Vermont.

Este fim-de-semana fomos passear ao Parque Natural do Douro Internacional. Eu, que ligo mais às plantas do que aos bichos, vibrei com as amoras maduras e com as amêndoas ainda nos ramos, e antecipei com alegria a época das castanhas.

We spent this weekend at Douro Internacional Natural Park, the second largest natural park in Portugal, where the river Douro passes through mountainous territory along the Portuguese/Spanish border. I’m partial to plants, not animals, so I was happy to see the blackberries ready to be picked, the almonds still on branches; I also anticipated with joy the chestnut season.

Latas vintage / Vintage cans

No outro dia realizei um sonho de infância: ir a um sótão cheio de velharias e poder trazer o que me apetecesse.

The other day I fulfilled one of my childhood dreams: to go to an attic full of of old objects and to be able to pick whatever took my fancy.

Imaginam o que é passar umas horas num local onde o tempo congelou? À semelhança de tantos outros sótãos, o dito sótão serve há anos como depósito daquilo que já não tem utilidade mas que não se quer deitar fora.

Can you imagine what it’s like to spend a couple of hours in a place when time has frozen? Like so many other attics, this particular one has been used for storing unuseful objects that people didn’t want to throw away.

De lá trouxe todas estas latas de laca e desodorizante de tempos que já lá vão. Qual o interesse disto, podem perguntar? Bem, para além dos desenhos e das cores, o que mais me encanta nestes achados prende-se com o facto de se tratarem de objectos de uso diário que nunca ninguém se daria ao trabalho de guardar… e que, 30 anos depois, eu fui encontrar numa caixa poeirenta. Para mim, são verdadeiros testemunhos da vida quotidiana no século XX.

That’s where I found these hairspray and deodorant cans from the past. What’s the point of all this, you may ask? Well, appart from vintage pictures and colours, what strikes me the most is that these are objects people use daily but would never think of keeping as mementos… objects which I happened to find inside a dusty box 30 years later. To me, these are real testimonials of 20th century daily life.

NYC – Patchwork patterns

Tenho pensado tanto em aventurar-me no mundo do patchwork e dos quilts que em Nova Iorque via motivos de patchwork por todo o lado.

I’ve been thinking so much about going into patchwork and quilting that in New York I saw patchwork patterns everywhere.

No American Folk Art Museum, fiquei que tempos a observar este wedding quilt.

At the American Folk Art Museum I contemplated the details in this wedding quilt for hours.

No Met, esta decoração tumular do Antigo Egipto fez-me pensar num padrão muito simples de quadrados coloridos cortados por riscas brancas.

At the Met, this funerary wall decoration back from Ancient Egypt made me think of a very simple pattern of colourful squares separated by crisp white stripes.

E que tal esta obra tardia de Piet Mondrian no MoMa? Será Broadway Boogie Woodie um título apropriado para um quilt?

What about this late work by Piet Mondrian at the MoMa? Would “Broadway Boogie Woodie” make a proper title for a quilt?

Que mais poderei escrever sobre o assunto numa cidade em que até os passeios servem de inspiração?

What more can I write on the matter in a city where even the sidewalks are inspirational?

Organizar papéis / Organising papers

Moldes, tutorials, recortes de revistas… papelada que se acumula, que nunca se encontra quando é precisa e que urge ser arrumada.

Patterns, tutorials, magazine tear outs… loads of paper that accumulate, that you can never find when you need them and that really needed to be organised.

Para fazer face ao caos, tenho recorrido a dossiers, pastas e cadernos. Uma pasta para os moldes, devidamente separados e etiquetados…

In order to face chaos, I’ve been using folders, files and notebooks. A folder for patterns, all properly separated and labeled…

… um dossier para os tutorials que aparecem por toda a parte e que imprimo para experimentar…

… a file for all the tutorials out there; I print out many of them hoping to someday giving them a try…

… e um caderno preto daqueles intemporais, forrado a tecido Cath Kidston, para os recortes das minhas revistas preferidas.

Tinta, papel, carimbos / Ink, paper, stamps

No outro dia estava eu a observar atentamente a estante da Fnac dedicada aos “tempos livres”, lamentando-me por nunca se conseguir encontrar livros decentes sobre crafts nesta cidade, quando o vislumbre de uma lombada me fez engolir o meu descontentamento… Lotta Prints? Na Fnac? Muito mais caro que na Amazon mas o que é que isso interessa? Está aqui, posso folheá-lo e vou levá-lo!

The other day I was perusing the hobbies bookshelf at Fnac, moaning about how it’s impossible to find decent craft books in this city, when a glance at a spine made me swallow up my dissatisfaction… Lotta Prints? At Fnac? Much more expensive that at Amazon but who cares? It’s right here, I’m able to skim through it and I’m taking it!

Já aqui publiquei um video da Lotta Jansdotter, uma sueca que se mudou para São Francisco aos 20 anos e que é um fenómeno no mundo do design crafty (mais sobre a Lotta aqui). Este livro é excelente e fez-me recuar à “génese” do meu interesse pelos crafts: este livro aqui em baixo que marcou a minha infância.

I’ve already posted a video that features Lotta Jansdotter, a Swedish young woman who moved to San Francisco at age 20 and who is a crafty design phenomenon (more about Lotta here). This is an excellent book that made me go back to the “genesis”of my interest on crafts: this book below that I used to love when I was a little girl.

Muitos anos antes de me ter decidido sentar a uma máquina de costura, o meu interesse era o papel: papel de lustro, papel de seda, papel crepe, cartolina… Depois vieram as tintas, os carimbos, as horas passadas a ver os livros sobre interiores da minha mãe, as revistas de decoração, as caixas, molduras e pequenos móveis que pintei. Em seguida, os tecidos. E agora este livro, que me abre um mundo de possibilidades para conjugar tintas e tecidos, estampagem e costura.

Many years before I decided to try my mum’s sewing machine, I was interested in paper: colourful lustre paper and others whose name in English I don’t know… Then came paint, stamps, the hours spent skimming through my mum’s interior books, decor magazines, and the boxes, frames and little pieces of furniture I painted. Afterwards, fabrics. And now this book that opens up a world of possibilities to conjugate paint and fabrics, printing and sewing.
