Bonecos feltrados / Felted softies

Hoje fomos a outro baptizado. Peguei em duas camisolas feltradas e fiz estas pequenas criaturas para oferecer ao bebé.

Today we went to another child’s christening. I used two felted sweaters and I made these little creatures.
O porco é um molde da Hillary Lang. Usei-o a 200% e acrescentei-lhe um rabinho.

Inspirada pelos wallpockets que a Sally Shim faz, resolvi fazer um para a nossa entrada. Precisava de um sítio onde pôr as cartas por abrir e algumas folhas de papel, e acho que isto não se poderia adequar mais à nossa falta de espaço.

Inspired by the great wallpockets Sally Shim makes, I decided to make one for our entryway. I needed a place where to put unopened letters and some paper and I think this is the best solution considering our lack of space.

Pendurei-o por cima da nossa “mesa de entrada”, um antigo lavatório que recuperámos e que era assim:

Last-minute gifts

Estes foram os presentes de última hora (aliás, de último minuto, porque foram feitos contra-relógio) para o baptizado de um pequeno novo primo. Em Dezembro subscrevi o Handmade Pledge, em que me comprometi a comprar coisas feitas à mão sempre que possível. Esta situação ainda foi melhor porque não comprei, fiz! É tão bom fazer presentes a pensar num bebé!

These were the last-minute gifts I made for a little new cousin’s christening that took place today. Last December I took the Handmade Pledge, where I commited myself to buying handmade things whenever possible. But this situation was even better because I didn’t buy the presents, I made them! It feels so good to make presents for a baby!

Fico sempre meio fascinada com o “poder” da costura… como é possível que tecidos planos contenham tanto potencial e possam ser transformados naquilo que quisermos. Quando acabo estes projectos sinto-me sempre plena, concretizada, cheia de satisfação! Pus dois guizos dentro desta bola para que desperte ainda mais curiosidade ao bebé.

I’m always a bit fascinated with the “power” of sewing… how it is possible that flat fabrics have so much potential and can be transformed into whatever we want. Whenever I finish projects like these I feel so full of satisfaction! I’ve put two little jingle bells inside the ball to awake the baby’s curiosity.

Quanto a este boneco, é o lavender baby criado pela Molly Chicken. Tal como o nome indica, tem um bocadinho de alfazema misturada com o enchimento. O tecido dos carros é japonês e comprei-o aqui.

This softy is the lovely lavender baby by Molly Chicken. It has a bit of lavender mixed with the filling; as for the fabric with the little cars, it’s Japanese and was bought here.

Uhuuu!! Ontem à noite fiz uma visita à minha pobre e orfã máquina de costura e, três horas depois, saí um pouf debaixo do braço. O molde é Gum Drop Pillows da Amy Butler; este é o modelo mais pequeno e escolhi um tecido que ficasse bem na sala da minha mãe. Estou contente, contente!

Oohooo!! Last night I payed a visit to my poor, orphan sewing machine and, three hours later, I left with this ottoman under my arm. The pattern is Gum Drop Pillows by Amy Butler; this is the smaller pillow and I chose a fabric that goes well with my mum’s living room decoration. I’m happy, happy!

Tricot vs. costura / Knitting vs. sewing

A minha mãe diz que tricotar a acalma. A mim, bem pelo contrário, o tricot provoca-me stress, com tantas malhas sempre a cair, tantas contagens, enfim. Aliás, foi graças a esta minha frustração com o tricot que me lancei na costura. Aí sim, posso improvisar à minha medida e o cérebro consegue libertar-se totalmente.

My mum says that knitting calms her down. My own experience is quite the opposite: knitting stresses me awfully and I make far too many mistakes. This is actually why I began sewing: I feel that sewing is much more liberating and when I sew my brain feels free.

Mas, neste Natal, a minha mãe não resistiu aos kits tricot que a Benetton tinha à venda e ofereceu-me esta lã fabulosa e estas agulhas de madeira. Estou a tricotar um cachecol, com o ponto mais simples que há e muito calmamente…

Nonetheless, this Xmas my mum could not resist those knitting kits Benetton was selling and gave me this fabulous wool and these wooden straws. I’m now slowly knitting a very simple scarf…

Dezembro / December

Dezembro significa o início oficial da época natalícia. Apetece enfeitar a árvore, rever as listas de presentes, começar a fazer embrulhos e ver muitas revistas e livros com ideias para o Natal.
December means the official beginning of the Christmas season. I want to decorate my tree, go through the gift lists, start wrapping presents and look at loads of Xmas books and magazines.

Este ano o nosso pinheiro (o nosso primeiro pinheiro de Natal!) é natural e será replantado em Janeiro. Tinha decidido enfeitá-lo apenas com objectos feitos à mão, como este anjinho feito pela Saracoloridos que comprámos na Afinal de contas, em Sintra, mas não resisti a estes pássaros de vidro do IKEA.

This year our tree (our very first Xmas tree!) is natural and will be replanted in January. I had decided to decorate it with nothing but handmade ornaments (like this little angel by Saracoloridos we bought at Afinal de contas in Sintra) but I could not resist these glass birds from IKEA.

Os dois enfeites que se seguem foram usados, há um ano, para enfeitar uma certa mesa. A ideia foi tirada da revista Martha Stewart Holidays do ano passado.
