Isto de ser crafty e subscrever o Handmade Pledge é muito bonito… mas e quando se trata de dar presentes a homens? O que é que se pode oferecer oferecer a um homem que seja simultaneamente feito à mão e giro, útil e… uhm… masculino?! Bem, se o homem em causa tiver uma casa, pega-se no tecido mais sóbrio que se encontrar e fazem-se quatro bases para copos. A questão é: será que ele as achou giras, úteis e masculinas?…

Blue Sky Hat

Ultimamente tenho tido uma vontade inexplicável de fazer roupa para mim. Já me sinto confiante com a máquina de costura, tecidos e linhas, e está na altura de dar um passo em frente. É verdade, vou aventurar-me na “confecção”, terreno inteiramente por desbravar, que sempre pensei estar reservado às modistas (aquelas senhoras em quem a minha avó fala às vezes).

Lately I’ve been having an inexplicable wish to make clothes for myself. I now feel confident with all the thread, fabrics and sewing machine business and it’s time to make a step forward. It’s true, I am about to venture into “confection”, a new land which I’ve always believed to be reserved to dressmakers (those ladies my grandmother sometimes talks about).

Primeiro passo: estudar o assunto. Decifrar moldes, direcções de corte, insersão de fechos éclair, casas de botões… Para isso conto com a minha recente aquisição deste livro, cuja capa mostrei aqui há dias.

First step: studying the subject. Deciphering patterns, cutting directions, zipper insertions, buttonholes… For all that I’m relying on my most recent purchase: this book whose cover I showed here a few days ago.

Segundo passo: fazer algo intermédio. Um chapéu, por exemplo. O dia da mãe aproxima-se e a minha mãe anda-me a dizer há tanto que precisa de um chapéu… É isso mesmo: o Blue Sky Hat da Amy Butler.

Second step: making something in-between. A hat, for example. Mother’s day is coming and my mum has been saying for so long that she needs a sun hat… That’s it: Amy Butler‘s Blue Sky Hat.

O Tiago dispôs-se a fazer a sessão fotográfica: tentámos de manhã mas a luz estava má; ao fim da tarde fomos ao Guincho et voilà!

Recentemente tive uma encomenda de um kit costura como este que fiz o mês passado. Como não gosto de fazer coisas iguais, e como andava há que tempos para experimentar fazer um destes sacos-cestos de inspiração japonesa, saiu-me isto. Acho que ainda lhe vou acrescentar uma tesoura e alguns carrinhos de linhas.

Recently I had a commission to make a sewing kit like the one I made last month. Because I don’t like making the same things over and over again and also because I have been meaning to make one of those zakka fabric baskets, I came up with this. I’ll probably add a pair of scissors and some spools of thread.


Almofadas / Cushions

Sendo o branco o elemento dominante da nossa casa, por vezes há que lhe dar uns toques de cor. Fico sempre surpreendida por notar que o branco faz realçar extraordinariamente as cores que lhe sobrepomos.

White is our home’s main element and sometimes we have to add some slashes of colour. I am always amazed at the waycolours become even more vibrant when they’re placed above a white background.

Estas almofadas foram feitas de uma maneira básica, rápida e eficaz: um painel de tecido para a frente, dois paineis sobrepostos para as costas, fita (ou botões) para manter tudo no sítio. Uma rectangular para a chaise-longue…

These cushions were made in a basic, fast and effective way: one fabric pannel for the front, two pannels for the back and some ribbon (or buttons) to keep everything in its place. A rectangular cushion on the chaise-longue…

… e uma quadrada (muito amarrotada porque muito usada!) no sofá.

… and a square one (very creased due to its use) on the sofa.

Pois… ainda não sei fazer casas de botões…

Saquinhos de alfazema são provavelmente um presente do mais tradicional que há… No entanto, a mim parecem-me indispensáveis! Estes foram feitos com um charm pack da colecção Ginger Blossom da designer e blogger Sandi Henderson.


Lavender sachets are one of the most traditional gifts… Nevertheless, I find them indispensable! These ones were made using a charm pack of the Ginger Blossom collection by designer&blogger Sandi Henderson.

Hoje a minha sobrinha Francisca faz 10 anos. Depois de termos trocado ideias sobre uns livros que recebi no Natal, lembrei-me de lhe oferecer “o meu 1º crafty kit”. O molde do cesto de tecido, concebido pela Sarah Neuburger, foi tirado do livro The Crafter’s Companion. Acrescentei-lhe este livro, alguns retalhos, uma alfineteira, um agulheiro e um frasquinho com botões.

Today is my niece Francisca’s 10th birthday. Because we have exchanged views about some books I got for Christmas, I decided to give her a “crafty kit for newbies”. Sarah Neuburger made the pattern for this fabric basket for The Crafter’s Companion book. I added this book, some fat quarters, a pincushion, a needle book and a small jar full of buttons.

Época de morangos / Strawberry season

Começou a época dos morangos na minha cozinha. Depois de provar os morangos biológicos que comprei na Biocoop de Figo Maduro, chegou a vez de fazer uma cortina para a pseudo-janela que temos por cima do lava-loiça. Adoro este tecido e estava a guardá-lo há mais de um ano para um projecto especial — agora posso olhar para ele várias vezes por dia!

It’s strawberry season in my kitchen. After tasting the biological strawberries I bought at Biocoop, a bio supermarket near Lisbon, it was time to whip up a curtain for the sort of wannabe window we have above our kitchen sink. I especially love this fabric and I had been saving it for a special project for over a year — now I can look at it several times a day!

Entretanto fiz uma almofada cá para casa com uns quadrados de um charm pack Moda e “quiltada”, o que constituiu algo de completamente novo para mim!

Meanwhile, I made a cushion for our living room using some squares from a Moda charm pack and I quilted it, which was something entirely new to me!
