Postcard wrap

Quem viaja comigo sabe que ando sempre à procura de postais. Postais giros. E selos. Selos giros. Gosto de os escrever em cafés e de os meter em marcos do correio (tenho várias fotografias desses momentos de pura alegria; um dia hei-de partilhá-las aqui).

Anyone who has travelled with me knows that I’m always looking for postcards. Cute postcards. And stamps. Cute stamps. I like to write them while sitting in cafés and I like to put them in mailboxes (I have several photos of those moments of pure joy; someday I’ll share them here).

Esta é a minha interpretação do gratitude wrap da Amanda. Vou levá-lo para Nova Iorque e escrever muitos postais à família e aos amigos.

Novo saco, novo propósito / New bag, new purpose

O tecido dos mollybirds que mostrei anteontem serviu de empurrão para fazer finalmente um saco que já estava na agenda há vários meses. O molde chama-se Mischievous Gnome Messenger Bag e é da autoria da Meg, blogger e fundadora do Sew Liberated (antigo Montessori by Hand).

The mollybirds fabic I showed in the last post was the final push to make a bag that had been on my agenda for ages. It’s called the Mischievous Gnome Messenger Bag and it’s by Meg, blogger and founder of Sew Liberated (formely known as Montessori by Hand).

Apesar de este tipo de messenger bags não ser propriamente o meu estilo, precisava de um saco grande e prático para a nossa viagem a Nova Iorque para a semana… Pois é, vou novamente à grande cidade e prometo reportagem completa!

Although this style of messenger bags would’t be my first choice, I needed a large, practical bag to take on our upcoming trip to NYC… Yes, next week we’re leaving for the big city and I promise to make a full report!

Gostei muito deste molde: as dimensões são bem pensadas e tem pormenores que marcam a diferença, como os bolsos frontais e traseiros. As especificações de tecidos apontavam para uma fazenda de lã como tecido principal, mas como estamos no Verão resolvi substituí-la por estopa de linho. O tecido azul faz parte da colecção Katie Jump Rope desenhada pela Denise Schmidt.

I really liked this pattern: the bag size is well-thought and the details like the rear and front pockets do make a difference. The pattern calls for wool as main fabric but since it’s Summer I decided to use linen. The blue fabric is part of the Katie Jump Rope collection by Denise Schmidt.


É assim tão evidente que gosto de encarnado com azul? 🙂

Mais uma vez / Once again

Hoje fiz dois tote bags — há muito tempo que não fazia este modelo tão simples. Estive a pensar (pensa-se muito enquanto se cose… devem ser os movimentos repetitivos que libertam a mente) e apercebi-me de que, desde que comecei a fazer sacos, carteiras e malas (tudo sinónimos?), têm-se seguido modelos e moldes sem nunca voltar atrás. Hoje foi dia de revisão da matéria dada.

Today I sewed two tote bags — I haven’t made this simple bag in a while. I was thinking (one thinks a lot when one sews; it’s probably the repetitive movements that set the mind free) and I realized that, since I started making bags, handbags and purses, I’ve been trying out and/or following patterns without looking back. Today was revising day.

Para além de rever coisas antigas, também repeti costuras mais recentes… quem diria que os organizadores de carteira seriam tão bem acolhidos? 🙂

Besides revisiting the past, I also made some new things again… who would have guessed that the purse organizers would be such a hit? 🙂

Pois é, lá decidi aumentar o molde desta carteira para 150% e fazer uma mala para a minha mãe, que não gosta de sacos grandes. Acrescentei uma alça, de resto é em tudo igual à anterior. Continuo a adorar a forma!

Well, I did enlarge this clutch‘s pattern to 150% to make a bag for my mum, who doesn’t like big bags. I added a strap, other wise it’s pretty mutch the same pattern. I really love this shape!

Curvy clutch

A época dos casamentos já começou e com ela chegaram inquietações do tipo “será que o cor-de-rosa do casaco é exactamente o mesmo cor-de-rosa do vestido?” ou “e que sapatos/brincos/penteado vou levar?”. Sim, que a vida não é só feita de feitos heróicos e preocupações intelectuais…

Wedding season has arrived and I see myself posing questions like “is the pink in that jacket exactly the same as the pink in the dress?” or “what shoes/earrings/hairdo I’m going to choose?”. Yes, life is not just heroic gestures and intelectual concerns…

No seguimento de tudo isto, dei por mim a pensar que não tinha uma carteira a condizer com a toilette. Ontem fiz uma busca pelo Etsy e encontrei este molde de pochette nesta loja. Como o molde é em pdf, recebi-o pouco tempo depois de o ter comprado e ao fim da noite já tinha esta carteira feita. E estreei-me com o fecho magnético!

All that said, I realised I had no clutch to match my outfit. Yesterday I searched around Etsy for a while and found this curvy clutch pattern in this shop. It’s a pdf pattern so I received it only a few hours after I bought it and by the end of the night this clutch had made its way into this world. And it was the first time I put on a magnetic snap!

Gosto imenso da forma desta carteira, acho-a é muito pequena… Vou aumentar o molde para 150%, 200% e 300% para ver o que poderá sair daí. Já pensei pôr uma alça na versão maior: poderá ficar uma mala gira!

I really like the shape of this clutch, I just find it a bit too small… I’m going to enlarge the pattern 150%, 200% and 300% and see what I can do with it. I already thought of adding a strap on the biggest version: maybe I can turn it into a cute bag!

Sentimental patchwork – II

Literatura de casa-de-banho… tópico não especialmente agradável mas bastante humano. Visto que a minha casa-de-banho é minúscula e tem zero espaço extra, há meses que me debatia com o sítio onde arrumar jornais e livros que por lá vão ficando…

Toilet litterature… a rather unpleasant but very human topic. For months I’ve been struggling with the question where to store newspapers and books that end up there, since my bathroom is tiny and has no extra storage possibilities at all…

Foi então que me lembrei da criação da Jennifer Casa: o kidlet. Inicialmente concebido para livros e brinquedos de crianças, este kidlet era mesmo aquilo que me convinha para o dito local.

That’s when I thought of Jennifer Casa‘s creation: the kidlet. Originally conceived to hold children’s books and toys, the kidlet was just the thing I needed for that specific room.

E visto que já tinha um cesto cheia de retalhos encarnados e azuis, resolvi fazer a minha própria versão a partir das instruções da Jennifer e saiu-me este saco só de uma asa.

And since I already had a basket full of red and blue scraps, I decided to make my own version based on Jennifer’s pattern and came up with this one-straped tote bag.

É perfeito para o propósito e agora só falta espetar um gancho na parede e pendurá-lo.

It turn out perfect for its purpose and now all I need to do is hang it on a hook.

Branco total / All in white

Recentemente temos pintado alguns objectos de nossa casa… de branco. A Mafalda diz que a nossa casa se assemelha ao Olimpo, mas a verdade é que a tinta branca é óptima para cobrir madeiras desinteressantes e harmonizar estilos. Dito isto, pintámos (e uso o plural com propriedade) dois bancos e dois espelhos. O espelho da casa-de-banho tem direito a antes e depois. Estou contente!

Recently we have painted some objects in our home… white. Mafalda says our home seems Mount Olympus, but truth is white paint is a great tool for covering uninteresting wood and harmonizing styles. So we painted (and I intentionaly use the plural) two benches and two mirrors. The bathroom mirror can be seen before and after the job. I’m happy! 🙂

Sentimental patchwork

Um ano e meio a coser quase diariamente tem produzido muitos retalhos. Para além da vertente ecológica e económica de não deitar fora coisas que ainda possam vir a ser úteis, cada bocado de tecido que guardo nestes cestos evoca projectos passados e faz-me pensar neste blog. A verdade é que ter o blog incentiva-me a pôr ideias em prática, a acabar projectos em curso, enfim, a andar para a frente com a costura.

Sewing for a year and a half has produced a lot of scraps. Besides the environmental and economic side of not throwing away things than can still be useful, each piece of fabric I store inside these baskets evokes past projects and makes me think of this blog. Thruth is having the blog motivates me to put ideas into practise, to finish wips: in a nutshell, to move on with my sewing.

Resolvi então dar uso aos retalhos. Apesar de andar com vontade de aventurar no mundo dos quilts, decidi adiar esse mergulho e aplicar antes a minha energia em algo que me faz falta: uma capa para a máquina de costura, que proteja a “minha menina” dos nefastos efeitos do pó.

So, I decided to give this scraps some use. Although I’m eager to venture into quilting, I’ve decided to postpone that wish for now and to focus my energy into something that’s missing in the craftroom: a cover for my sewing machine that will protect “my girl” from the nasty effects of dust.

Comecei por separar os retalhos por cor: para um lado, encarnados e azuis; para o outro, cor-de-rosa, amarelo, verde e cor-de-laranja. Depois cosi-os uns aos outros sem medições nem regras e fiz cinco painéis. Em seguida, pus cada painel em cima de lona branca e “quiltei” tudo com costuras horizontais.

I began to separate scraps by colour: on one side, I placed reds and blues; on the other, pinks, yellows, greens and oranges. Then I pieced them without mesurements nor rules and made five pannels. Afterwards, I placed each pannel over white canvas and quilted everything together sewing horizontal seams.



Depois cosi os painéis uns aos outos, fiz uma baínha generosa (para a capa se aguentar em pé) e pronto! Projecto acabado e imediatamente posto a uso.

Then I sewed the pannels together, made a generous hem (for the cover to stand up straight) and that was it! Project finished nd immediately put into use.



Antes e depois / Before and after

Atrás de portas fechadas escondem-se muitas vezes mundos sinistros… As imagens que vêem comprovam exactamente isso: o roupeiro do nosso quarto era de morte. A nossa casa sofreu obras de fundo antes de virmos para cá morar, mas decidimos deixar o armário para mais tarde, achando (1) que iríamos poupar imenso dinheiro arranjando-o nós próprios e (2) que se trataria de uma remodelação facílima. Pois claro…

Behind closed doors sometimes sinister worlds hide… The pictures you see are an example of this: the closet in our bedroom was too bad to be true. Our house went through a major remodelation before we moved in but we decided to leave the closet for later, thinking that (1) we would save a lot of money if we did the work ourselves; (2) this would be an easy task. Yeah, right…

A única razão que me leva a publicar estas imagens de fugir prende-se com o facto de eu adorar ver fotografias tipo “antes e depois”. Quanto ao armário… para além dos evidentes tijolos cimento à vista (ugh!), urgia arranjar uma solução para pendurar mais roupa e arrumar sapatos.

The only reason why I’m publishing such horrendous pictures is because I love seeing “before and after” shots. As for the closet… besides the bricks and cement (ugh!) we had to come up with a solution for hanging more clothes and storing shoes.

Depois de duas aplicações de estuque, três demãos de tinta branca e duas de tinta azul, reforçámos o varão de cima e pendurámos um pequeno varão a meio (estou a falar no plural mas limitei-me a pintar e a dar muito apoio moral). As sapateiras são do IKEA e não podiam ser mais baratas nem mais fáceis de montar.

After two applications of plaster, three coats of white paint and two coats of blue paint, we reinforced the top rail and hung a smaler rail at the right (I keep saying “we” but I just painted and gave moral support). The shoe racks are from IKEA and they couldn’t be cheaper nor easier to assemble.

Aqui está o dito roupeiro em todo o seu esplendor!
