Esta semana fechou a época de caça ao faisão no Reino Unido. Há muitos faisões ao pé de nossa casa (os machos são verdadeiramente impressionantes) e um dos caçadores ofereceu-nos um par deles (literalmente). Tinha a ideia de que depená-los seria uma aventura mas afinal não foi nada de especial. E, para além dum almoço delicioso, fiquei com uma caixa de penas extraordinárias para usar em todo o tipo de projectos – comecei por fazer uma coroa e uns arranjos para cima da lareira, mas seguir-se-ão outras coisas de certeza. The pheasant shooting season closed this week in the UK. There are many pheasants around our house (the males are truly impressive) and one of the huntsmen gave us a pair of them (literally). I thought that plucking them would be quite an adventure but it turns out it’s not as bad as that. And, in addition to a delicious lunch, I’m now left with a box of extraordinary feathers to use in all kinds of projects – I’ve already made a wreath and some arrangements for the mantel but I’m sure other things will follow. Rododendro :: Rhododendron

Há uns tempos cortei uns botões de rododendro e trouxe-os para a sala. Pu-los dentro de água, perto do aquecedor, e hoje vi que começaram a abrir! Fico sempre surpreendida quando estas coisas acontecem –  é impossível ser-se blasé em relação à natureza.
A while ago I cut some rhododendron buds and brought them indoors to our sitting room. I put them on vases with water, next to the radiator, and today I noticed that they’re bursting open! I’m always surprised when these things happen – it’s impossible to be blasé when it comes to nature.

Winter :: Snowdrops

Apesar de tentar manter uma atitude positiva, tenho sentido o peso do Inverno. Frio + solidão não são uma boa associação. Mas a Primavera está ao virar da esquina e, de um dia para o outro, o jardim encheu-se de campainhas-de-Inverno (snowdrops)! São absolutamente encantadoras e enchem-me de esperança. Agora só falta um dia de sol…
Despite trying to keep a positive attitude, I’ve been feeling the full weight of Winter. Cold + solitude should never go together. But Spring is on its way and suddenly the garden is full of snowdrops! They are absolutely charming and fill me with hope. The only thing missing now is a sunny day…

Panos da loiça são algo fundamental numa cozinha. Para além da sua óbvia função, são uma boa maneira de trazer cores e padrões a uma divisão onde se passa tanto tempo. E, como devem ser mudados quase diariamente, convém ter muitos. O site britânico All Tea Towels ofereceu-me três panos à escolha e decidi-me por dois de puro linho e um de algodão: este, este e este. A qualidade é excelente, o serviço óptimo (rápido e personalizado) e a escolha vasta. E agora a boa notícia: há um pano a sorteio! Tea towels are an absolute necessity in a kitchen. Beside their obvious purpose, they’re a great way of bringing colour and pattern to a room where one spends so much time. And, since they should be changed almost daily, one should own lots of them. The British site All Tea Towels offered me the choice of three tea towels and I picked two pure linen cloths and a cotton one: this, this and this. Bolo de Chocolate e Laranja Amarga :: Chocolate & Marmalade Cake

O que fazer com frascos e frascos de marmalade demasiado boa para ser deitada fora, mas não suficientemente boa para ser oferecida? Uma das opções é disfarçá-la em bolos. A clássica combinação de chocolate e laranja nunca me desilude e o bolo, apesar de não ser muito fotogénico e parecer seco, é denso, subtil e bastante saboroso. O truque é não o deixar cozer demais. Encontrei a receita aqui.
What to do with jars and jars of marmalade that’s too good to be thrown away but not good enough to be gifted? One of the options is to use it in cakes. The classic combination of chocolate ad orange never fails to please me and this cake, although a bit dry and sad looking, is actually quite dense, subtle and delicious. The trick is not to overbake it. I found the recipe here.
