Embrulhar Presentes :: Wrapping Presents

Desde pequena que adoro embrulhar presentes. À semelhança da minha mãe, a última gaveta da  escrivaninha do meu quarto estava reservada para rolos de papel, laços, fitas e afins. O trabalho que mais gozo me deu enquanto adolescente foi estar numa loja de decoração a fazer embrulhos durante a época de Natal. Lembro-me que a minha tia-bisavó (que sempre viveu em casa da minha avó) guardava todos os bocadinhos de papel e de fita para mais tarde reutilizar, e eu própria sou incapaz de deitar fora caixas, mapas, jornais com caracteres exóticos, frascos, bocados de tecido… e perco a cabeça com rolos de papel de embrulho. Sei que há mil e uma maneiras criativas de embrulhar um presente, mas às vezes o que apetece mesmo é usar um bom papel espesso, atar uma fita larga a toda a volta e finalizar com um grande laçarote!
Ever since I was a child I have loved wrapping presents. Emulating my mother, I had reserved the last drawer in my bedroom desk solely for wrapping paper, ribbons, bows and so forth. My favourite job as a teenager was to work in a home décor shop wrapping gifts during the Christmas season. I remember my great great aunt (who always lived with my grandmother) squirreling away bits of paper and string and I myself am incapable of throwing away any sort of boxes, maps, exotic newspapers, jars, fabric pieces… and I can’t resist buying rolls of wrapping paper. I know there are a million different ways to creatively wrap a present but sometimes you just can’t beat a piece of good, sturdy wrapping paper, a wide strip of ribbon going all around the gift and a big, fat bow on top of it all!

Enxoval :: Layette

Ontem o carteiro trouxe-me duas caixas repletas de tricots para o bebé: uma veio da minha mãe, a outra da minha sogra. Gradualmente, tenho andado a lavar e a arrumar o enxoval e o quarto e sinto-me cheia de sorte por estarmos a receber tanta roupa emprestada, herdada, comprada e feita especialmente para esta criança. Entre mãe, avó, sogra, cunhada, tias e amigas, é bom sentir que, apesar de longe, estou rodeada de ajudas e afectos.
(nas fotografias: 1- tudo tricotado à mão, excepto a manta em xadrez escocês, que foi da minha mãe e dos meus tios; 2- camisas emprestadas; 3- uns cueiros que usei em bebé; 4- camisas muito anos 50 da minha mãe; 5- fraldas que a minha mãe bordou quando ainda me tinha dentro da sua barriga; 6- o quilt que fiz para a cama de grades)
Yesterday the postman brought me two boxes filled with baby hand-knits: one was sent by my mother, the other one by my mother-in-law. I’ve gradually been washing and organising both the clothes and the nursery, always feeling so lucky that we’re being given so much that’s either inherited, borrowed, bought or especially made for this baby. Amongst mother, grandmother, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, aunts and friends, it’s lovely to feel that, although far away, I’m surrounded by so much help and affection.

Há qualquer coisa de fresco e excitante no panorama crafty australiano — os blogs, livros e revistas da Austrália tendem a apresentar uma estética leve, colorida, cheia de sol e boa-disposição. Uma das pessoas que se destaca nesse meio é a Pip Lincolne, que escreve o blog Meet Me at Mike’s e que acaba de lançar o seu terceiro livro Make Hey! While the Sun Shines. 
Make Hey! While the Sun Shines é um livro para a nova geração de pessoas que se interessam por trabalhos manuais. Não há constrangimentos de espécie alguma ao longo das suas páginas: todas as cores do arco-íris têm lugar de destaque e as técnicas e materiais propostos não poderiam ser mais diversificados. Há projectos de costura, bordados, tricot, crochet, estampagem em papel, découpage e até algumas receitas e o discurso é despretensioso, encorajador e enérgico. Fui imediatamente cativada pelas cores e pelas formas geoméricas (a Pip gosta assumidamente de triângulos) e resolvi fazer uns postais muito simples com carimbos em forma de pequenos quadrados. 
A Hardie Grant enviou-me dois exemplares de Make Hey! There’s something fresh and exciting about the Australian craft scene — every blog, book and magazine tends to present an image of a light, colourful, sunny and playful Australia. One of the highlights of that world is Pip Lincolne, who writes the hugely successful blog Meet Me at Mike’s and who has just launched her third craft book: Make Hey! While the Sun Shines.

Make Hey! While the Sun Shines is a book aimed at the new generation of craft enthusiasts. There are no constraints whatsoever along its pages: every colour of the rainbow enjoys pride of place and there’s room for an array of craft techniques and supplies. There’s sewing, embroidery, knitting, crochet, paper stamping, découpage and even a handful of recipes and the discourse is unpretentious, encouraging and energetic. I was immediately captivated by all the colours and geometric shapes (Pip sure loves her triangles) and made a couple very simple postcards with some square rubber stamps.

Natal Natural :: Natural Christmas

À medida que a escuridão avança, o frio aperta e a gravidez progride, os meus níveis de energia vão diminuindo — por isso, parece-me que as decorações de Natal vão ser bastante simples cá por casa. Há um ano, enalteci as virtudes dos passeios pelo campo como fontes de elementos decorativos natalícios; este ano, chamo a atenção para as prateleiras do supermercado. Laranjas, limões e tangerinas são tão evocativos do Natal quanto pinhas e azevinho, não acham?
As days get colder and darker and my pregnancy progresses, I feel my energy levels going down — so I guess my 2011 Christmas decorations will be quite low-key. Last year I raved about the virtues of country foraging for natural christmassy elements; this year, I draw your attention to supermarket shelves. Oranges, lemons and mandarines are as evocative of Christmas as holly and pine cones, wouldn’t you agree?

Clutch de Botões :: Button Clutch

Entre quilt kits e preparativos para a chegada do bebé, tenho andado a terminar encomendas (lembrem-me para em 2012 começar a pensar no Natal em Junho!). Esta foi a clutch de botões que acabei ontem à tarde. 
In the midst of quilt kits and baby gear, I’ve been finishing the last orders (in 2012 I must start thinking about Christmas in June!). This is the button clutch I finished yesterday afternoon.

Queques de Chocolate :: Chocolate Muffins

Em tardes frias, escuras e chuvosas, nada melhor do que fazer um bolo. Há uns dias apeteceu-me comer  queques de chocolate — folheei os meus livros de receitas e acabei por fazer os queques deste livro. Pontos a favor: são rápidos e fáceis de fazer (aliás, é uma receita ideal para crianças). Pontos contra: são bons, mas não são excelentes. Se quiserem experimentar, a receita aparece aqui (se bem que em medidas americanas).
On dark, cold, rainy afternoons, there’s nothing better than baking a cake. A few days ago I had a craving for chocolate muffins — I flipped through my recipe books and ended up making the muffins from this book. In favour: they’re quick and easy (in fact, it’s the perfect child-friendly recipe). Against them: they’re good but they’re not amazing. If you want to give them a try, the recipe is here (in American measurements).

Hoje é feriado em Portugal e muita gente aproveita para enfeitar a árvore de Natal. No norte da Europa, as pessoas acenderam a primeira vela de advento no domingo passado. A verdade é que estamos em plena época natalícia! Aqui por casa ainda andamos em pinturas e remodelações, mas espero começar a decorar a casa este fim-de-semana. E vocês, têm grandes planos para este Natal?
Today is a bank holiday in Portugal and many people use the day to decorate their Christmas tree. In northern Europe, the first candle of Advent was lit last Sunday. Truth is, Christmas season has begun! Here at our house we’re still painting and re-decorating but I’m hoping to start making our home look more christmassy this weekend. What about you, have you got great plans for this Christmas?

Flores de Novembro :: November Flowers

No domingo apanhei as últimas flores do nosso jardim.
O limoeiro já veio para dentro de casa e está cheio de limões verdes e flores novas.
Os narcisos de papel despontaram.
Não posso acreditar que amanhã já seja dia 1 de Dezembro!

On Sunday I picked the last flowers in our garden.
The lemon tree has been indoors for a month now and it’s full of green lemons and new flowers.
The paperwhites have already bloomed.
I can’t believe that December starts tomorrow!
