Coisas :: Stuff
Megan Auman has created a very interesting manifesto: it’s called Stuff Does Matter and it’s intended to celebrate the things that enrich our lives. The belief that consumption is something negative and that we should let go of material things is exaggerated and unrealistic. Megan advocates that our current problem is not a result of placing too much value on stuff, but too little (disposable fashion comes to mind). One must consume with conscience. This makes me think of a famous William Morris quote: “Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful.” We should think before buying. I may seem like a maniac but I refuse to buy ugly stuff (yes, not all match boxes are created equal). And if it’s really impossible to avoid ugly packaging, I’ll transfer the contents into a more pleasing container once I get home. I mean, these are the things I see everyday… why shouldn’t they matter?
This picnic hamper is a good example of something that makes our lives more agreeable — something that builds up memories. We hadn’t even been living in this house for a month when the postman delivered us a surprise parcel: my mother bought the hamper through Amazon and asked for it to be sent directly to us. We’ve already used it dozens of times: just the two of us, with house guests, and now on outings with the baby. Would it be as pleasurable to go for picnics with a mere isothermal bag and some disposable plates? Not quite.
Of course I’m not perfect and will sometimes succumb to impulse buys that I regret later. This is a declaration of intention, not a certificate of virtue. The secret is to try and buy (or make!) things with quality. The secret is to consume less, but better.
